Despite widespread fears that social media and other forms of algorithmically filtered services (like search) lead to filter bubbles, we know surprisingly little about what effect social media have on people's news diets.
Data from the 2017 Reuters Institute Digital News Report can help address this. Contrary to conventional wisdom, our analysis shows that social media use is clearly associated with incidental exposure to additional sources of news that people otherwise wouldn't use.

When Facebook Inc. wants to try something new, one of its first calls is to CNN. It was a key partner when Facebook introduced its news-reading app, Paper, in 2014. When the social network shuttered Paper soon after, transmogrifying it into a series of fast-loading News Feed stories called Instant Articles, CNN remained on board. And last year, when Facebook began focusing on hosting live video, CNN was one of the few parties to which it paid a nominal fee to produce clips.

As I reported in the villages of rural Nepal after the earthquake, I posted iPhone photographs with short dispatches on my Instagram account (@sonianarang). I suddenly found my Instagram feed full of questions about the situation in Nepal, so I kept posting more and more. In my Instagram photos, I tried to showcase the life of regular people I was meeting everyday — women who had built makeshift shelters, young mothers in a tent with their babies, and schoolchildren trying to study despite the disastrous earthquake.

CNN journalist Yusuf Omar knows his way around social media. He calls his brand of reporting "jeans journalism," because everything he needs, from making a video to taking pictures and interviews, fits in his jeans. Omar's style of journalism caters to the smartphone generation — to audiences who like their news on the move.
True to his cause, he used social media and apps like Snapchat to document his journey from South Africa to Damascus.

Most of us think "perfect" memory means never forgetting, but maybe forgetting actually helps us navigate a world that is random and ever-changing.
So say two neuroscientists in a review published in the journal Neuron. The argument is that memory isn't supposed to act like a video recorder, but instead like a list of useful rules that help us make better decisions, says study co-author Blake Richards.

Time is the fourth dimension of gardening, and sets landscape design apart from other art forms.
In a new garden, the plants go in young and reach an optimum state of scale and ornament after a few short years. Even with expert care, the original design cannot remain static.
When a garden gets old and neglected, its lines are blurred by its disorder. This entropy takes many forms.

No matter where your plot of land is — in the heart of a bustling city or down a quiet lane — there's an opportunity to make your garden feel like a secret, secluded space. The best secret gardens not only feel private, but they also have a certain magic about them, evoking the sense of being removed from the hustle of daily life and transported to somewhere else entirely.

As in real estate, so in sustainable landscape architecture: Location is everything. A successful coastal Florida garden is going to require some very different elements than one in California's Napa Valley. "Everything really depends on the site," says Lauren Stimson, principal at Stephen Stimson Landscape Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is known for its agrarian approach and sensitive use of local materials.

Driving direct connections with readers has become increasingly important. For publishers with subscription models, converting those readers into subscribers — like everything in digital media — has gotten more complicated.
News UK estimates people need to come into contact with the brand seven times before subscribing. Before last August, when The Times of London launched an open-access model where people can read two articles in exchange for a name and email, tracking these seven visits was harder.

Medium
A new study of internet users in Spain shows that those who trust "the media" less are more willing to pay for news online.
The explanation for this counterintuitive behavior is that those distrustful folks "are willing to pay for those specific media that they trust," according to the researchers, Alfonso Vara-Miguel of the Universidad de Navarra and Manuel Goyanes of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid.

These days, it's eminently possible for authors to publish and distribute books they've written themselves. Conversion and merchandising technologies are accessible enough for almost anyone to use without significant training. The costs are no longer a barrier for many. We often call writers in this category "self-published authors" but I'd like to respectfully challenge that term. There is no "self" in "self-publishing."
