People who wind up becoming their own bosses because they have to — after a layoff, say, or to escape a toxic work culture — may be outnumbered by those who start freelancing by choice.
According to the latest study by the Freelancers Union and Upwork, 63% of the freelance workforce (which numbers as many as 55 million strong) reported doing so voluntarily rather than out of necessity, and 79% agreed that it’s better than working a normal job.

I started my writing career in the early 1980s as a satirical essayist. I wrote a book but was eventually lured away by the crazy money writers make in film and television. A few years ago, having accrued some cash and a Writer's Guild pension, I returned to more literary pursuits. My reentry into the publishing world's atmosphere was staggering. I was the 1950s airplane passenger — accustomed to flying in style — walking onto a flight today and being trampled by earbud-wearing passengers in velour running suits.

Local news is in dire straits. In a quest for profit, publishers have gutted newsrooms and hollowed out coverage of local communities. As the industry struggles to build the business model of the future, it's missing an opportunity to embrace a funding mechanism that can enshrine journalism as a public service: the special service district.

Kathleen Vohs, the scientist and professor who spearheaded the study, first noticed that desk tidiness influences outcomes when she moved office buildings during her Ph.D. studies. Vohs suspected that the new environment was influencing her test subjects, and ended up discovering through research that her hypothesis held weight.

It's summer, so lots of people are posting vacation pictures on various social media platforms. I do, too — but not until I'm back to my regular life.
I still log in while traveling; I look at others' posts, comment sometimes; I might even post an occasional article. But I don't post descriptions or pictures of what I did or saw that day, even if I think my friends would enjoy them.

Facebook says it wants to help publishers sell subscriptions. But Facebook says it doesn't want a piece of the revenue those subscriptions generate, or any of the data involved in the transaction.
Those details are emerging as Facebook talks to publishers about a subscription tool it wants to launch later this year, in conjunction with its Instant Articles program, where Facebook hosts publishers' articles on its own mobile app.

One-third of all link clicks on Facebook already go to its self-hosted Instant Articles. Facebook claims they drive more referral traffic click-for-click because people don't abandon them mid-click as they do with slow-loading mobile websites. Now Facebook is teaming up with Nielsen to prove that individual publishers benefit when they post with the Instant Articles format.

Pink and yellow wildflowers burst from a lush bed of grass hidden from public view for more than a century. Towering trees and snow-capped mountains encircle the wild meadow, beckoning visitors to a largely untouched piece of California's Sierra Nevada.
Conservation groups bought the land in Lower Carpenter Valley north of Lake Tahoe and are opening it for tours. It contains rare carnivorous plants and threatened birds and serves as a migration corridor for other species.

Right up there on Portland must-list is the massive International Rose Test Garden at Washington Park, where 4.5 acres are covered with gorgeous blooms.

The great pivot to video continues. In the past few weeks alone, the publishers that said they were shifting resources to video (and often laying off staff in the process) has included Vice, Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated and MTV News. Underpinning all of these moves is an inconvenient truth: Advertisers love digital video more than users. And even ad buyers are wondering if this will pan out.

Advertising is the lifeblood of the internet. Ahead of Google's second-quarter earnings, here's a look at the state of the company's ad revenue and how it has grown over the years.

Late last year, the San Diego Union-Tribune began a daunting project: Create an almanac for the San Diego metropolitan area, a region that 3.1 million residents call home.
As they began profiling the city's smaller communities (there are lots), journalists at the Union-Tribune realized there was a huge reservoir of information they hadn't tapped yet: Nextdoor.
