Digital Book World
Here's a good game to play in an idle moment. Imagine you are starting a new publishing company, with your own money, from scratch today. Whom would you choose to employ on fixed-term contracts, and which external services would you hire in? Focuses the mind, doesn't it?
In response to Emma Barnes' well-intentioned post on the benefits of keeping work in house and not outsourcing, let's be clear about one thing: this particular ship has already sailed.

Digital Book World
There's a brave new world in book publishing, and it's being shaped by and around audience insights. Not only are publishers becoming more adept at using data to work smarter, but code and algorithms are also getting better at gathering information and executing tasks without the help of humans.
At Jellybooks, we recently developed a piece of code called candy.js, which is embedded inside an e-book to track how users actually read.

I don't understand why anyone would want to be an Olympic diver. Why would you choose to throw yourself head-first into a flat surface 30 feet below — not just throw yourself but try to look good while you're going down, with somersaults and twists, while people you can't see judge every second of your drop? Sounds horrible. But then again, so does writing. The blank page, teeming with uncertainty, error, and, most brutal of all, rejection, is terrifying. And yet the world continues to produce both Olympic divers and writers.

Whether we're behind the podium or awaiting our turn, numbing our bottoms on the chill of metal foldout chairs or trying to work some life into our terror-stricken tongues, we introverts feel the pain of the public performance. This is because there are requirements to being a writer. Other than being a writer, I mean. Firstly, there's the need to become part of the writing "community."

The hardest part of getting a book published is the actual writing. All it takes to see this is the number of people who dream of publishing a book but never manage to hammer out a rough draft. I spent 20 years trying to write my first novel before I finally pulled it off. It's not unusual for an aspiring writer to struggle for years and never produce a finished product to submit to agents or editors.
Once the hard part is done and a draft is written, there are two basic routes a writer can take.

The plan made me feel dishonest and creepy, so it took me a long time to send my novel out under a man's name. But each time I read a study about unconscious bias, I got a little closer to trying it.
I set up a new e-mail address under a name — let's say it was George Leyer, though it wasn't — and left it empty. Weeks went by without word from the agents who had my work. I read another study about how people rate job applicants they believe are female and how much better they like those they believe are male.

My favorite book is "War and Peace."
And I know what you're thinking: "Oh, another writer wanting people to think he's all intellectual and highbrow."
But it really is my favorite book, only not because it has 1,500 pages of unforgettable characters or a generational plot that is more compelling than that of any other book I've read. It's because right before I started reading it, my life was in a rut.
