The New York Times Magazine
On July 11, 2000, in one of the more unlikely moments in the history of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Orrin Hatch handed the microphone to Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, to hear his thoughts on art in the age of digital reproduction. When I first started writing, everyone always warned me to stay far, far away from the comments. Years ago, when David Baldacci was setting out in the book-writing business, he received an invitation. A woman in Nebraska called and asked him to fly out and visit her book club. It had three members. "I said, 'I'll be there.' She goes, 'I'll have pot roast for dinner.' I said, 'Terrific!'"
Baldacci told me his philosophy on book tours was pretty basic, back in the '90s: "If anybody called up and said, 'Would you come?' I said, 'Yes.'"

Authors should not assign their copyrights to publishers. As our Model Contract emphasizes:
"CAUTION: Do not allow the publisher to take your copyright or to publish the copyright notice in any name other than yours. Except in very unusual circumstances, this practice is not standard in the industry and harms your economic interests. No reputable publisher should demand that you allow it to do so."

If you're self-publishing your books, formatting the finished versions and distributing them to retailers can be a complicated process. To make this complex process simpler, several services are available to help authors distribute their books. And since the universe is perpetually on a mission to make your brain explode, all of the service providers are different: They partner with different retailers, offer different royalty rates, have different upfront costs, do or don't offer formatting services, etc.

Change leads to anxiety, and there has been a lot of change in publishing in recent years. There is one trend, though, that is striking more fears in publishers' minds than any other. And that is the fear of data.
While sales data has been with us for a long time and is used extensively, there are now new kinds of data that are becoming available. Social media campaigns can reveal who clicked on a link. Email campaigns can be tracked for opens, forwards and reactions to calls to action.
