A great sentence makes you want to chew it over slowly in your mouth the first time you read it. A great sentence compels you to rehearse it again in your mind's ear, and then again later on. A sentence must have a certain distinction of style — the words come in an order that couldn't have been assembled by any other writer.

On Tuesday, NPR followed through with a much-discussed decision to abolish its story-page comments in favor of social media, joining a growing list of publishers including The Toronto Star, Vice's Motherboard, Mic and Reuters.
The recent closures are an indicator of a troubling trend that signals detachment on the part of news organizations when it comes to reader engagement, said Andrew Losowsky, the journalist who's spearheading The Coral Project.

Journalism and marketing aren't the same thing. OK, you can take a joint degree in them, and content marketers are always ranting on about how the skills of each role complement each other, but they're wrong.
In spite of this, there is a growing trend of journalists taking up careers in marketing. I should know; I'm one of them.
This is, in part, due to the fact that whilst journalism (and particularly print) as a sector is declining rapidly with job cuts left, right and center, marketing is experiencing a surge in profitability.

Q. What is the "best" publishing method for digital books? I don't want my readership to be limited to users who have Apple devices if I use iBooks Author. Is the .pdf format viable?
A. One major factor in picking the "best" format for publishing your electronic book is finding the format that works best for your book. Depending on where you put your book up for sale, you may also be able to export it into multiple formats to reach the widest audience.

Do you still shop at your local bookstore? I typically go once, maybe twice a year, and the last time for me was December 2015. This weekend, though, I made a rare summer visit to my local Barnes & Noble in search of books for my almost six-month-old grandson, Jasper. No matter how good Amazon makes its "Look Inside" feature, it will never replace the experience of flipping through a children's book, especially those with pop-ups, pull-tabs and other fun elements you find in so many children's titles.

Edibles. It's here to stay (a trend, not a fad), and yet our industry hasn't capitalized on it nearly enough. It's frustrating to see the food industry take off, whether it's gourmet food, restaurants or CSA farms, and we're still treading water with our ornamental plants. Don't get me wrong — there's definitely a need for beauty — but we can serve a dual purpose for our customers: beauty and necessity.

The effects of neonicotinoids on the health of pollinators has been a common topic of research and discussion in recent years. This past week, reports from two recent studies offer somewhat conflicting studies.
The first comes from a team of Washington State University entomologists who studied apiaries in urban, rural, and agricultural areas in Washington state, looking at potential honey bee colony exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides from pollen foraging.

It's time to look forward to the spring season and what plants will get you off to the right start. These new cultivars have all the traits of good breeding — uniform habits, bold colors, showy blooms, good vigor, and excellent branching. And while a pop of color is nice in spring, it's even better when it lasts through the summer. Among these new intros are several good options for the cross-season color that consumers love.

It's been just over four months since The New York Times started producing live video for Facebook, but already the scoreboard is flashing. A few earned gold medals. Several others finished strong. And a lot should never have made the team.
One of the medalists was Times journalist Deborah Acosta, who produced a pair of quirky, engaging videos after she happened upon some old Kodachrome slides trashed on a Midtown sidewalk.

On the last day of June, Facebook dammed up a stream of audience data that publishers once used to see how their content performed inside Facebook. Late last week, it acknowledged that it may not turn the tap back on, either.
Specifically, Facebook noted that it was cutting off new access to Domain Insights, a tool that gave website developers access to rudimentary information about how a site's externally hosted content performed when users shared it inside Facebook.

A faceless ghost is a fitting icon for Snapchat, considering the app is an enigma to many people. But those raised on smartphones more easily see it for what it is — primarily a camera app and a storytelling platform, with secondary social networking and messaging features, as explored in a new eMarketer report, "Snapchat Advertising: A Roadmap for US Brand Marketers and Digital Agency Executives."

Blue skies and superb gardens greeted the 40 attendees of the "Grand Cottages in the Berkshires" Region 1 meeting on July 22. The tour began with an early morning photo shoot at Naumkeag, Mabel Choate's iconic early 20th century garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
