Whether you're managing social media for your client, or you are the client, there are actions you can take to simmer any negative buzz on your social pages.

Pew Research Center
As of August 2017, two-thirds (67%) of Americans report that they get at least some of their news on social media — with two-in-10 doing so often, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. This is a modest increase since early 2016, when (during the height of the presidential primaries) 62% of U.S. adults reported getting news from social media.

TechCrunch
While Facebook prepares to offer readers a way to subscribe and pay for news directly from inside its app, the social network continues to tinker with how it presents publishers' content elsewhere. In the latest development, TechCrunch has learned and confirmed that Facebook has removed Instant Articles — Facebook's self-hosted, faster-loading article format for mobile — from Messenger.

Good E-Reader
Not too long ago, self-published authors were collectively admonished about the need to invest in their work. Hiring quality editors, proofreaders, cover designers and formatters before attempting to sell a book was the constant mantra of industry experts. While some hapless writers continued to slap their Word docs up on Amazon and hope to snare a few readers, authors who took their careers seriously made the proper investments.

While virtual reality might still be finding its place on the hype curve, 360 video content is exploding. There are thousands of 360 videos on YouTube and Facebook, and the number increases day by day.
A few large publishers have gone heavily for the format, the most well-known example being The New York Times with their Daily 360 covering breaking news around the world.

This isn't another one of those "how to write" posts. It's a post about the actual physical nitty-gritty of how we go about putting our stories down into words.
Lots of writers now use the ubiquitous laptop — some have even found a way of writing on tablets, and others still, as recent discussions following the recent BEA Indie Author Fringe have shown, have been talking about how they use voice recognition software for dictating their stories.

Every time students take a writing exercise on Quill.org — a writing instruction platform for schools — their responses are logged by computers and analyzed for patterns. Algorithms take account of every false word they type, every misplaced comma, every inappropriate conjunction, deepening a sense of where the nation's kids are succeeding in sentence-construction and where they need extra help.

Advertising Age
The best media-about-media news I've heard in ages came in separate, seemingly unrelated waves.
I'll start with the most recent: Henry Blodget, the editor and CEO of Business Insider, declared that his media company is no longer chasing after growth. "We have already this amazing audience of the next generation of executives," he told Digiday's Brian Morrissey in a podcast interview.

The Emoji Movie, in which the protagonist can't help but express a wide variety of emotions instead of the one assigned to him, may have gotten something right. A new UC Berkeley study challenges a long-held assumption in psychology that most human emotions fall within the universal categories of happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust.

An overlooked part of the Underground Railroad's history is being brought back to life in Pittsburgh's Frick Park. The From Slavery to Freedom Garden is a collaboration between the Frick Environmental Center and the Senator John Heinz History Center.
Nineteenth century paintings, African textiles and even shackles used on enslaved African people are some of the objects on display within the museum's walls.

How did your garden grow? Do you still have the taste of summer on your lips from all the luscious melons and tomatoes you grew? Or did the garden get ahead of you? Maybe you never had a chance to put one in at all.

Since 1997, I have been on the "hotseat" on radio shows, where I'm the garden expert waiting to answer your questions. I am armed with a pen and a dwindling pad of paper that has served me for the last seven of those years. I started with Tom Wieble, host of Green Scene — WOSU 89.7 — on Friday evenings. I initially was just the plant person, but now I field questions on all-things-garden when I am on All Sides with Ann Fisher on 89.7 NPR Radio News.

Have you been to a conference or trade show as a newcomer, unsure how everything works, not knowing anyone there? Me, too. Several times. I admit I had become quite jaded about the entire concept of going to a conference put together by an organization in which I only knew a few people. This was 100% true when I started planning a trip to #GWA2017. Fortunately for me, my support group was smarter than me and talked me into making the trek.
