Mashable    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The tactile pleasure of worn pages between your fingers is hard to replace. But when it comes to encouraging people to embrace the written word, e-readers trump their physical counterparts. People who own e-book devices say they read more than people who don't, at a rate of 24 books per year to 15. Education, escape, relaxation and entertainment rank as people's main motivations to plow through books — proving that reading remains a popular pastime. More

The No. 1 tip of successful writers
Writer's Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Judy Christie: When I turned 50, I decided I'd procrastinated long enough. I committed to write my first novel — you know the one, the story that's wandered around in your mind for a decade or two. I gave myself a deadline. I blocked some spare (yeah, right) time on my calendar. I pulled out a few notes I'd jotted through the years. What I didn't know about writing a novel far outweighed what I did know. More

ReadWriteWeb    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Richard McManus: Like many of you, I'm connected to the Internet virtually every waking hour of my day — via computer, tablet and mobile phone. Yet I still regularly visit my local public library, in order to borrow books, CDs and DVDs. Which made me wonder: are these two worlds disconnected, or is the Social Web being integrated into our public libraries? In this fourth installment in ReadWriteWeb's Social Books series, I aim to find out! More

E-book publishing rejuvenated at The Wall Street Journal
Digital Book World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Wall Street Journal was an early entrant into the e-book market compared to other non-book-publishing media companies. In late 2010, the New York-based newspaper produced and sold its first e-books through a proprietary store powered by content store and e-commerce solutions company iAmplify. Throughout 2011 and 2012, however, WSJ did little to enhance its e-book program. More

Column: Government's e-book case helps Amazon build toward a monopoly
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Everyone knows that new technologies can upend old industries, whether the victims are makers of horse-drawn carriages or television broadcasters. The recent settlement in a federal price-fixing case involving book publishers, Apple and shows that they can also turn the law upside down. To hear the government talk, this is all about breaking up a conspiracy to drive up the price of e-books on your Kindle, iPad or other device. More

The 5 bad habits of good writers
edittorrent (blog)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
1. Bad habit: Thinking that you have only one book in you. Many writers start out because they want to tell one particular story, a story that's been inside them for a long time. They write that story in a white heat, and then ... then what? Are they done being a writer now that they've written that one book? No. More
