Publishers' book sales for the first half of the year were down 4.1% at $5.58 billion compared to $5.82 billion for the first six months in 2014. These numbers include sales for all tracked categories. Publishers net revenue is tracked monthly by the Association of American Publishers and includes sales data from more than 1,200 publishers.

The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post are among the publications putting their weight behind Blendle, a Dutch platform that offers individual articles in exchange for micropayments. All three media brands have signed up to make their content availableon Blendle, and the New York Times Company and German publisher Axel Springer took a combined 23% stake in Blendle a year ago.

When a traditionally published novelist self-publishes his backlist, does he call himself a hybrid author? Usually not — he's still a novelist.
Most often, authors become hybrid by self-publishing first. They are self-publishing authors, indie authors, indie self-pubs, and then hybrid authors. All are authors with adjectives.
We don't often hear people calling themselves traditionally published authors or trad-pubs.

Amazon makes up a higher percentage of the total U.S. e-book market than the oft-cited 65% figure: when indie books without ISBNs are included in the statistics, Amazon accounts for 74% of all U.S. e-book purchases and 71% of all U.S. consumer dollars spent on e-books.
Outside of Amazon.com, four other major online retailers comprise nearly the entirety of the remaing 26% of the U.S. e-book market.

Last week, Vice's technology and science news site Motherboard dropped its comments section, opting to replace it with an old school "letters to the editor" feature. Then Reddit launched a news site called Upvoted that didn't include a comments section. (You can still comment on the stories on Reddit itself.)
What's going on here? For years, comment boxes have been a staple of the online experience.

Google is "even more aggressive" than Amazon when it comes to control over the pricing of content, the chief of Hachette Livre, Arnaud Nourry, has warned.
The chairman and CEO of the world's second largest trade publisher said the search engine company was more dangerous than fellow American-based conglomerate Amazon because it gives information away for free.

For decades, a limited number of publishing houses that distributed books through brick and mortar retailers controlled the book business. If you wanted to publish a book, you had to go through the traditional system. This meant finding an agent to shop your book to the publishing houses on your behalf. If they selected your manuscript, enlightened editors would massage it (at least that's how I envisioned it) and carefully market it — including arranging a cover design, reviews, bookstore windows, signings and maybe even a book tour.
