As we creep closer to Halloween, we decided to address one of the scariest words a content writer can hear: plagiarism. AHHHHHHH!!! It strikes fear into the hearts of writers everywhere. Plagiarism has destroyed careers, discredited highly respected writers, and jeopardized the reputations of publications that have been in business for decades.
But what, precisely, does plagiarism mean? And how can it affect you as a marketing professional?

It's been getting harder for me to read things on my phone and my laptop. I've caught myself squinting and holding the screen closer to my face. I've worried that my eyesight is starting to go.
These hurdles have made me grumpier over time, but what pushed me over the edge was when Google's App Engine console — a page that, as a developer, I use daily — changed its text from legible to illegible.

The Week
There is a myriad of ways we can express quantities in English, but there are just a couple words that are much in dispute.
Wait. Should that be "there are myriad ways" and "just a couple of words?"
Those are the two words much in dispute: myriad and couple. But we ought to just relax and let them go. They're only sliding down the same slope as many words have before them, and still more might after them: the slippery slope from noun to quantifier.

The New York City Council voted unanimously to give freelance workers a set of protections against wage theft that are believed to be the first of their kind in the country.
Known as the Freelance Isn't Free Act, the measure requires anyone hiring a freelance worker to agree in writing to a timetable and procedure for payment, and increases the potential awards to freelancers bringing legal complaints against those who have failed to pay them promptly.

The writing's on the wall for print revenue. Amidst all the argy-bargy last week over whether news publishers should ever have got into digital publishing at all (and an excellent rebuttal from our contributor Kevin Anderson) there was a universal tacit acknowledgement that the glory days of newsprint are long behind us.
That's not to say that it can't still play a role in publishing strategies.

The Media Briefing
When publishers aren't talking about native, they're talking about video.
Video is a priority for publishers — and not just because Facebook has told them it should be. Audiences are watching more and more digital video on a wider variety of platforms. Consequently brands are clamoring for video content against which they can serve ads, and hard-up publishers and huge media companies alike are only too eager to oblige.

Boys might claim it's a simple matter of preferring to read magazines or the latest musings of their friends on social media rather than the classics. But two of the largest studies ever conducted into the reading habits of children in the U.K. have put those excuses to bed.
Boys, of every age, no matter the nature of the literature before them, typically read less thoroughly than girls.

The EPA has made a significant number of changes to the Worker Protection Standard that were put into effect in 1992. The new changes require growers of agricultural crops, including greenhouses and nurseries, to be compliant starting Jan. 2, 2017.
A new report on Michigan State University Extension's website outlines some of these changes in the new rules.

Several years ago a popular bumper sticker proclaimed, "Free Gondwanaland!" referring to the now-separated supercontinent that once united Africa, South America. Australia and India. While the bumper sticker was obviously facetious, we have already biologically united not only Gondwanaland, but also Laurasia — the North American, European and Asian supercontinent.

On Thursday morning, Twitter announced it is closing down Vine, the company's beloved six-second video app and standalone social network it purchased in 2012 for $30 million. Across the internet, the shuttering feels momentous — the end of yet another vibrant and truly weird pocket of the web. On Twitter, the memorials began almost immediately as timelines transformed into an ad-hoc "Best of Vine" clip show.

Snapchat wants to stop sharing ad revenue with its media partners and pay them licensing fees instead. That means guaranteeing publishers a payday up front, while limiting what they might earn in the long run. The move could have implications for media outlets that have built up dedicated Snapchat staffs — sometimes upwards of 10 people.

Recode
One of the wonderful things about the rise of the web, twentysomething years ago, was the way in which it democratized publishing — suddenly, anyone with an idea could set up a website and make it available to anyone. Early on, publishing online required at least a rudimentary understanding of code. To be an online writer meant you also had to be a coder. But services quickly emerged that allowed anyone with a word processor to create online content.

I came to the 2016 Annual Conference and Expo in Atlanta as a newbie both to the organization and as a first-time conference attendee.
