When I began overhauling the Financial Times' editorial email newsletters a couple of years ago, I was soon faced with positive reinforcement, technical frustrations and sources of deep satisfaction.
The good news was that we were on the cusp of a renewed surge in interest in email by many media organizations that has only grown since, suggesting we were on the right track.

A flurry of PR announcements over the last week shows publishers are still experimenting in earnest with virtual reality.
Some of the new projects, from the BBC and the Guardian, make use of Google's latest VR platform, DayDream. And more are coming down the pike from the Financial Times and CNN International. Monetizing VR, though, is still tough. VR audiences are small, and the content is costly to make.

Social media directors for organizations and small-to-medium-sized businesses have evidently had a hard time simultaneously managing accounts for Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger. So much so, in fact, that a number of them have evidently been juggling multiple iPhones to make it all work.
To help with this, Facebook is unveiling a feature called universal inbox to handle communications for all three channels via the Facebook Pages app.

After nine years, Twitter users will finally be able to mute specific conversations on the site, as well as filter out all tweets with a particular word or phrase from their notifications.
Muting conversations serves two obvious purposes: users who have a tweet go viral will no longer have to deal with thousands of replies from strangers, while users stuck in an interminable conversation between people they don't know will be able to silently drop out of the discussion.

In Mid-October, the Nobel Committee for Literature awarded the Nobel Prize to Bob Dylan, "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition." The announcement came shortly after the most recent Annual Arts Basic Survey by the National Endowment for the Arts released data that found adults in the United States read less literature for pleasure.

Media Shift
The election is over and now we have many lamenting the journalism industry's failure to be diverse, to understand the stories of the people who voted for Trump. It sounds like a variation of the tech-industry diversity tune that I've heard for a long time now.
I'm not talking about the gender or racial diversity problem because far more qualified people have written extensively and expertly on that.

A key question that news organizations face, particularly during intense periods like election years, is to what degree journalists should present the facts with some interpretation, giving their audience guidance in navigating all the information that comes at them.
A majority of U.S. adults (59%) reject the idea of adding interpretation, saying that the news media should present the facts alone, a recent Pew Research Center survey found.

Horticulture needs good people, and good people need good jobs. That's a given. But there are myriad challenges to finding and maintaining a thriving workforce in the green industry, not the least of which are stalled immigration reform efforts and robust competition for younger workers' passions.
Attracting new talent has always been a struggle, to be sure, but the proliferation of digital distractions has added another layer to the challenge.

Grower Talks
U.S. plant patents were one of the first forms of intellectual property protection developed in the world. Going back over 80 years, the drafters of the U.S. Plant Patent Act wanted plant breeders to have the same form of patent rights as other inventors. Now, with the amazing new breeding and mutagenesis technologies, the question has to be asked: Are plant breeders of new varieties still able to experience the same rights they previously enjoyed?

In June, 2016 I seized a last-minute opportunity to join an escorted tour to Havana and western Cuba with other horticulturally inclined travelers. This trip had been arranged by Holbrook Travel, Gainesville, Florida to highlight historic Havana, its horticulture and botanic gardens. With President Obama's earlier visit in March, and the prospect of normalizing relations, now seemed an opportune time to go before the fabric of Cuban society changes with an influx of American cash and culture.
