Writers have always been whiners. For nearly a hundred years, since at least the time of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the death of the novel has been presaged. And now, egged on by BuzzFeed and video games and just general hypercaffeinated, e-mail-all-the-time ADHD, the book is apparently, finally, about to die. At least we'll have good stuff to read while we wait. More

In a major update of our 2006 member survey, Task Force Chair C.L. Fornari hopes to identify shifts in member activities that will help the GWA Board plan programs for 2013 and beyond. Some members report survey requests went to spam filters. Please check your spam files for a message from, which is Survey Monkey, our vendor for this research. We urge everyone to participate in the survey. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 3.

The GWA Media Awards TF has delayed the entry period for 2012 awards submissions while it reviews and expands program categories and criteria. A special focus is on updating electronic works categories for blogs, websites, social media and other online works being created for gardening communications. Look for an updated program to be announced in January.

Simon & Schuster steps into self-publishing

Simon & Schuster is testing the water in the booming self-publishing market. The publishing company announced that it is teaming with Author Solutions, based in Bloomington, Ind., to create a separate house called Archway Publishing, which would be available for authors wanting to self-publish fiction, nonfiction, business or children's books. The best way to find books that will be available soon is to check out Google's "New and Coming Soon" section on the Play Store. From there, pre-ordering the book is simple: you purchase it just as you would any other book, and you'll receive it upon release. More
