Educators rethink teacher training
U.S. News & World Report
Joyce Randall, who's in her third year of teaching history to 10th graders in her hometown of Chicago, is blunt about the effort needed to succeed at her work. "This is a difficult job for anyone to do for a long period of time, especially for the money we're paid," she says. The 26-year-old spent 12 months at the Academy for Urban School Leadership, a hands-on residency program for future educators, where she gained both practical experience and a master's degree. Aside from a one-month stint on a construction site, she hasn't been able to find work in the four years since. Last fall she applied at a warehouse for airplane and construction machinery parts. She never heard back. But she reapplied and had an interview with the same company, and now she has good reason to be more hopeful.More

Federal stimulus funds for job training ending this summer
The Metro West Daily News
Even as unemployment remains stubbornly high, Massachusetts job training and placement programs face both federal budget cuts and the loss of stimulus funding that bolstered them through the recession. State work force development programs have received roughly $77.3 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or the federal stimulus plan. The largest portion of that money - $56 million to boost services mainly for low-income adults, youths and laid-off workers - has allowed the state to help an additional 18,000 people get job training and education, according to state labor officials.More

Aviation firms press Kansas for training, incentives

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and his top officials went to Wichita to ask what the state needs to do to keep and expand this city's role as the "aviation capital of the world."
