Labor budget invests in job training

The Labor Department's $12 billion request includes money for job-training programs to help the economy keep growing, department officials said. The blueprint allocates $125 million for a jointly run Workforce Innovation Fund with $100 million from the Department of Labor and a $25 million contribution from the U.S. Department of Education, the Labor Department said in a release. The International Association for Continuing Education and Training has awarded the Regional Office of Education's Professional Development Alliance the prestigious Authorized Provider status. IACET Authorized Providers are the only organizations approved to offer IACET Continuing Education Units. The recognition period extends for five years, and includes all programs offered or created during that time. More

Mississippi should invest more in adult education

The national job report revealed the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January. However, Mississippi's rate registers above 10 percent and another lean budget year leaves many of the state's public structures vulnerable to underfunding. Mississippi's community colleges and universities have presented their Fiscal Year 2013 budget requests with concerns that funding for post-secondary institutions has reached a tipping point where educational quality could be affected. Funds would match job training with business needs

After John Perez was laid off from his job at an Omaha, Neb., printing company in 2010, he found his way to a job training program, enrolled in welding classes and before he knew it, he had a job in an industry with a perennial need for skilled workers, welding brackets at Distefano Technology and Manufacturing. "My goal the whole time was to find a good job at the end of this, and that happened," he said. But that story isn't common enough, as businesses with jobs to offer — in a time when plenty of people need work — report that they often can't find the right people. More
