"Freelancing is becoming a more prevalent, viable option for workers — a trend that spans across borders, industries, and occupations." That's according to Freelancing in America: 2015, a study commissioned by the Freelancers Union and Upwork. The study shows that 54 million Americans — 34 percent of U.S. workers — are currently working as freelancers. That's up 700,000 from the previous year. And according to research from Field Nation, 60 percent of companies plan to hire more freelancers than full-time employees by 2020.

We understand that teaching transcends technology and while software assists in the management of your training, the success of your business or training department ultimately rests upon the quality of training you deliver. That said, the selection of the technology that sits behind your training operation is pivotal in determining how successful you can be, how well you understand your performance and how quickly you can scale your operation.

The National Law Review
The U.S. Department of Education published proposed regulations regarding state authorization of postsecondary distance education and foreign locations of domestic institutions. The proposed rule also includes a number of new related disclosure requirements. The proposed rule establishes a 30-day notice and comment period, with comments due on or before Aug. 24. Following the comment period, the Education Department must publish its final regulations by Nov. 1 in order to take effect on July 1. With over 20 years of experience as a mechanic in three countries, there isn't much about working on cars that Mohamad Malli doesn't know. But since he arrived in Nova Scotia in January, the language barrier was one problem that Malli, who is originally from Syria and most recently lived in Jordan, couldn't fix on his own. Over the past month, Malli has been getting some assistance bridging that divide from an Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia program that helps him translate his skills as a mechanic to the Canadian context. The Bridge to Work program connects newcomers who are trained in a trade with employers who need their skills, linking the two through onsite language classes and interpreters.

Through the election-season upheaval in the U.S. and the Brexit vote in the U.K., working-class people are making it clear that they're worried about the future. And in one big way, their anxiety is justified. Many of their job options — factory work, farm work, postal work, sales work — are dwindling, and they're wondering what will go next.

Microlearning holds a great deal of appeal in today's fast paced corporate training world, where convenience in terms of time, ease of access, and precision of information, is of the utmost importance. Earlier this month, we took part in a Twitter chat run by HRZone, the subject was "Can you really prove training ROI?." We were one of around 15 particpants during the Q&A, and as well as the answers to the questions, there was also a lot of interesting conversation around attitudes to training, challenges for L&D teams, and even how the terms we use can hold us back.

K-12 TechDecisions (commentary)
Tim Albright, a contributor for K-12 TechDecisions, writes: "In the mid-90s, I was taking an economics class at my local community college. As soon as I walked into the room it was apparent that this would be a unique learning experience. At the front of the classroom were two large JVC 50-inch CRT monitors encased in an impressive wooden cabinet. Four PTZ cameras were laid out over the ceiling as were microphones. This was a distance learning classroom from the early days. My professor taught economics at Washington University in St. Louis as well as being an instructor at our little community college. We were able to learn from a highly respected professor through the magic of cameras, microphones and an ISDN line."

These days, it seems like everywhere you look there's a new article about how to meet the needs of millennials. No question, this generation is important, but what about the rest of the workforce? Gen Xers equal millennials as the largest population in the labor force (at roughly 34 percent each) and Baby Boomers still comprise 29 percent of the workforce.

Harvard Business Review (commentary)
Walter Frick, a contributor for Harvard Business Review, writes: "The vast majority of people who sign up for a MOOC — a massive open online course — never complete it. More than 50 percent consume less than half of the course's content. This is wrongly viewed as evidence that MOOCs don't work, that people are dropping off and not getting value. The assumption behind that conclusion is that you have to complete a whole, semester-long course to get value from online education. As a MOOC addict, I can tell you: that's not true. Instead, I've found there are at least three good ways to learn from MOOCs, depending on your goals and the time you plan to spend."

When we go on holidays to a different country, we usually take a travel guide with us. We want to know the basics like business hours, tips on restaurants, common expressions, but we also want to learn something about that country. Attractions, events, what people usually do there, its culture! And when we are able to talk to that country's native people and get to know how they live and work it's a whole learning experience.
