IACET
The International Association for Continuing Education and Training, a global, nonprofit leader in continuing education and training standards, announced the approval of its new ANSI/IACET 1-2018 Standard for Continuing Education and Training by the American National Standards Institute's Board of Standards Review. Following the announcement in the Nov. 10, 2017, issue of the ANSI Standards Action, IACET CEO, Joe McClary said, "ANSI accreditation makes IACET's training standard one of the best in the world. With an aging workforce and widening skill gaps in the global labor market, following a training standard has never been more important to translate skills from one generation to the next. We are thrilled to provide organizations across the globe with an updated Standard to reference when instructionally designing and delivering effective training."

It's easy to think of training as an expense with uncertain return, rather than an investment in the sustainable growth of your business. But while there's no denying that a corporate training program entails costs (some of them might be harder to quantify than others), the lack of training in the workplace poses its own risks, and can, in fact, be more expensive than the cost of the training itself. Some of these costly risks include high staff turnover, missing out on high-value and tech-savvy recruits, as well as losing competitive edge when team members don't have the latest skills to meet current-day challenges. The trick is to consider the costs associated with the lack of training in the workplace and balance them against the costs involved in providing training.

Cross training isn't a new concept. It has long occurred informally in the workplace when employees cover the front desk while the receptionist takes lunch, when someone handles a teammate's tasks while they're on vacation and when managers groom employees for promotion. But because employees who can perform a wide range of functions are a valuable asset — and are more engaged, because they're taking ownership of a variety of tasks — it may be worth formalizing this training.

For years, employers have faced a troubling lack of preparedness among college graduates entering the workforce. Their response was everything from promoting better communication to establishing rules about wearing headphones in the office. Now, it's apparent that the real issue — one that is true for more than young professionals — is incompetence. The use of the word "incompetence" is not meant as an insult but merely to recognize a lack of knowledge or experience in particular areas. Incompetence is a two-fold challenge. The first is conscious incompetence, when people are aware of what they don't know.

Color influences mood, energy level — and engagement. That's why color selection in e-Learning is a vital element of successful design. The colors used in e-Learning design can help set a tone — warmer colors will affect learners differently from cooler colors — and can also be used to convey information. A button or heading in a boldly contrasting color draws eyes and attention; that's one way that color and contrast can affect the way learners see relationships and hierarchies of information.

For any business, getting your marketing activity right is both a challenge and necessity. You need to make sure you're doing the best job possible to ensure that your business is well known among your target audiences, and also to make sure that you're pulling in as many potential leads as possible for your Sales team. Of course, it can be hard to know what the perfect mix of marketing activities is for your particular business, and you can run the risk of wasting lots of time and money on activities that don't actually give you that much return on investment.

Even a short user-generated video requires planning; video preproduction is as essential to the success of e-Learning videos as production and postproduction. A foundational understanding of what video preproduction is and what steps it might include is useful for any e-Learning professional who uses video — and that includes nearly all e-Learning designers and developers. Not all videos will require all of these video planning steps, but all will require some of them.

Businesses are spending more money than ever on e-Learning for their employees, and much of it is paid out to vendors who provide content authoring tools, ready-made learning content, learning management systems, and customized e-Learning services. When market research company Technavio reported on the global corporate e-Learning market in 2016, it predicted an 11 percent CAGR or compound annual growth rate for the period of 2016-2020. Its more recent report ups that figure to 18.54 percent for 2017-2021. This amounts to a global market that will be worth in excess of $30 billion.

Responsive design is all about making the most of the space available on the screen so the learning programs always look good. You've probably encountered web pages and learning initiatives where the content sits awkwardly on the screen, remaining illegible no matter how much you zoom in and out.
