How one town stood up to a Category 4 storm
Domestic Preparedness
Many have said Babcock Ranch in Florida was lucky regarding how well it fared during Hurricane Ian, which made landfall on September 28, 2022. Yes, it did feel lucky watching from the living room as the storm and devastation happened. The sliding glass doors bowed in and out, tapping the back of the chair as the wind pressures changed. But while it may feel lucky – the location, planning, design, engineering, and implementation of resilience and sustainability are all very intentional in the growing town of Babcock Ranch.

Homes that survived the Marshall Fire hid another disaster inside*
Colorado Newsline
On Dec. 30, 2021, one of the most destructive wildfires on record in Colorado swept through neighborhoods just a few miles from our offices at the University of Colorado Boulder. The flames destroyed over 1,000 buildings, yet when we drove through the affected neighborhoods, some houses were still completely intact right next to homes where nothing was left to burn.
Although the people who lived in these still-standing homes were spared the loss of everything they owned, when they returned after the fire, they found another disaster.

Power in numbers: How a whole-of-state approach can improve cybersecurity
Homeland Security Today
In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in cyberattacks against government organizations from small towns to major cities, to the federal government. In fact, there were 17 million leaked government records in Q1 2020 – a 278 percent rise compared to Q1 2019. Furthermore, the share of cyberattacks targeting states’ critical infrastructure increased from 20 percent to 40 percent of all attacks detected by Microsoft between July 2021 to June 2022. These figures paint a stark picture, and the unfortunate reality is that this issue isn’t going away anytime soon.

NOAA to advance seasonal high tide flooding predictions
Homeland Security News Wire
In 2023, NOAA plans to unveil a new model to more accurately predict when and where high tide flooding will likely occur up to a year ahead of time. This new information will help coastal communities better prepare and respond to potential flooding days to help lessen possible impacts from climate change. NOAA scientists detail the effort in a peer-reviewed journal article published in Frontiers in Marine Science.

Machine learning could predict rare disastrous events like earthquakes or pandemics
Homeland Security News Wire
When it comes to predicting disasters brought on by extreme events (think earthquakes, pandemics or “rogue waves” that could destroy coastal structures), computational modeling faces an almost insurmountable challenge: Statistically speaking, these events are so rare that there’s just not enough data on them to use predictive models to accurately forecast when they’ll happen next.

Pulsara is hosting a meeting on Jan. 11 with IAEM members and the EM community entitled 'Let's Talk! We've Cracked the Code on All Hazards Interoperable Communications and Patient Tracking'
IAEM
During stress events, efficient communication is essential. How many times have you used inefficient communication tools during an incident? Whether it’s a mass casualty incident, multiple patient incident, full-fledged disaster, or a worldwide pandemic, everyone – from emergency responders to public health – should have the ability to triage, track patients, communicate, assist in evacuation and reunification efforts, and manage the incident from one platform. Teams can use this same platform every day for routine transports, transfers, and transitions of care that scales on demand and in real-time connecting teams across organizations. Pulsara’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives Joey Branton, and EVP of Global Business and Chief Operating Officer Cynthia Bradford Lencioni invite you to an open discussion on Jan. 11, 1:00 p.m-2:00 p.m. EST, with topics covering interoperable communications, patient logistics, patient tracking, and data that scales on demand and in real-time during an incident.
