The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and several partner organizations, including IAEM, on Feb. 20 released the second video presentation from the inaugural PrepTalks Symposium, John Barry’s “The Next Pandemic: Lessons from History.” Barry’s PrepTalk, now online with additional resources, offers lessons learned from the 1918 and the 2009 influenza pandemics. He provides guidance on what emergency managers can do to work with public health and elected officials to implement measures that can save lives. PrepTalks are 15-to-20-minute presentations by subject-matter experts and national and international thought leaders, designed to spread new ideas, spark conversation, and promote innovative leadership for the issues confronting emergency managers now, and over the next 20 years. PrepTalks partners include FEMA, IAEM, National Emergency Management Association, National Homeland Security Consortium, and Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Mexico City got a substantial warning before the shaking from a distant earthquake arrived Friday — some 30 to 60 seconds broadcast over loudspeakers from an earthquake early warning system.
It was another success for Mexico City’s earthquake warning system — one which California, Oregon and Washington state still lack, and one that is an ongoing target for elimination by President Donald Trump.

Rebecca Costa, a world-renowned expert on “fast adaptation” will deliver an Oct. 23 plenary session on “The Good, the Bad, and the Actionable: Using Foresight and Data to Pre-dapt” at the IAEM 66th Annual Conference & EMEX in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Costa has developed an extensive track record of introducing disruptive, bleeding-edge technologies to clients such as Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Oracle, General Electric, 3M and others. Fresh off her national book tour, the author of The Watchman’s Rattle and On the Verge will guide emergency practitioners through groundbreaking technologies used to forecast future outcomes with historic accuracy. According to Costa, reacting to fast-changing ground conditions is no longer enough. Emergency responders must embrace tools such as predictive analytics, blockchain, crowd-sourcing, drones, satellite tracking, and more to “pre-dapt.” Using real world disasters - from hurricane relief in Puerto Rico and wild fires in California to a deadly flu season – Costa demonstrates how new technologies are being used to minimize disaster response and recovery. Now tornado researchers argue that the list should have another entry, at least for accuracy’s sake.
