The Liberals hope their daycare budget pledge will help more women join the workforce, but newly released documents suggest federal finance officials were once cautious about a lack of data allowing them to connect those dots when growth is slow.

A deadline requiring hospitals to meet new requirements for handling patient safety during emergencies is fast approaching.
The federal rule requiring upgrades in facility practice was published in September 2016 requires and went into effect on Nov. 16, 2016, requiring hospitals to be in compliance within one year, or by Nov. 15, 2017.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Technical Mapping Advisory Committee (TMAC) recently released its 2016 Annual Report, offering two new recommendations in regard to focusing on the importance of accurate flood hazard maps to provide relevant information for determining risk-based premiums. The 20-member TMAC is a federal advisory committee established to review and make recommendations to FEMA on matters related to the National Flood Mapping Program, as required by the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 and the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014. Any member of IAEM-USA in good standing is eligible for the Clayton R. Christopher Memorial Award, provided he or she is a local emergency management director/coordinator (city, county, tribal) who is currently working in that position or who retired no earlier than 2015. In addition to the 10 USA-only award categories, USA entrants also are encouraged to enter the IAEM-Global Awards Competition, which offers six additional award categories. IAEM members now have access to the recording of the latest IAEM Think Tank on “Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) – the How, the Why and the Future,” that was held Apr. 20, 2017. Drones or UAS are an emerging technology with great potential. In the past, they have been associated with their use in military and intelligence operations. However, small drones or UAS have become readily available, inexpensive, easy to operate, and highly versatile, which has resulted in a major increase in their use by hobbyist and recreational flyers. This IAEM Think Tank explored the use of UAS or drones, including the pros and cons of using them in emergency management.

FEMA’s annual funding opportunity for the Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) grants is now open. FP&S grants support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The application period for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 FP&S grants will close on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. EDT. A total of $34.5 million is available. The primary goal of these grants is to reduce injury and prevent fire-related deaths among high-risk populations. In 2005, Congress reauthorized funding for FP&S, and expanded the eligible uses of funds to include Firefighter Safety Research and Development.

The topic is “New NOAA Satellite Capabilities and Tropical Cyclone Research.” This webinar will highlight the capabilities of the new GOES-16 satellite and research plans for the 2017 hurricane season. Rescue workers have recovered the bodies of 18 victims in the central Colombia city of Manizales, where heavy rains caused a deadly landslide and mass evacuations.
Two more neighborhoods had to be evacuated at dawn on Thursday after a second night of thunderstorms elevated the risk of further landslides.
