The 2018 Asia Risk and Resilience Conference (ARRC), “Corporate Governance, Risk, and Resilience: Planning in Action,” will take place Aug. 29-31, 2018, at the Hilton in Singapore. Reconstruction has generally been slow everywhere in Nepal, but advocates for survivors like 70-year-old Tamang say the homes of widowed and elderly women have largely been overlooked in the rebuilding process.

The 2017-2018 season, which ran from the beginning of November to the end of April, recorded three cyclones — Gita, Hola and Fehi — but usually just one cyclone hits New Zealand every year.
Niwa climatologist Ben Noll said a marine heatwave, which has affected New Zealand's coastal waters, meant the cyclones weren't dying out as they headed south.

The deadline for article submissions on the theme of “Cybersecurity” has been extended to May 15, 2018. The IAEM Editorial Work Group is seeking the articles for an IAEM Bulletin special focus issue on cybersecurity, to be published in June 2018. Articles might include, but are not limited to: Cybersecurity 101 about securing your own security and how you protect your own assets; how you incorporate cybersecurity into your CEMP/EOP; a discussion of available Internet resources; how to coordinate cybersecurity among your response team; how to protect information in your EOC; preparing for cybersecurity incidents, vulnerabilities and risks associated with IOT (Internet of Things – including AV systems, HVAC, remote sensors, etc.), and best practices for designing and conducting cybersecurity exercises. These are just examples of articles. You may identify another aspect of cybersecurity as it relates to emergency management that you would like to write about. Article length is 750-1,500 words. The EMAP 5-2019 Draft Emergency Management Standard has been revised by the EMAP Technical Committee and is being released for public comment. The 60-day public comment period will close on June 28, 2018. All public comments received will be adjudicated by the EMAP Standards Subcommittee in December 2018 and formally voted on by the EMAP Technical Committee in 2019. The standard is a rigorous yet scalable industry standard for emergency management programs. It is flexible in design so that programs of varying sizes, populations, risks, and resources can use it as a blueprint for improvement and can attain compliance with the standard. The standard was collaboratively developed through a series of working groups of emergency management stakeholders from government, business and other sectors, and continues to evolve to represent the best in emergency management. The standard is revised on a three-year cycle that consists of committee collaboration within the EMAP Standard Subcommittee, a public comment period, and support from the EMAP Technical Committee that provides recommendations to the EMAP Commission. An abandoned building occupied by squatters in Sao Paulo caught fire and collapsed Tuesday, sending chunks of fiery debris crashing into neighboring buildings and surrounding streets.
Firefighters said at least one person had been killed in the collapse and that there could be more.
The building, a former headquarters of the federal police, caught fire around 1:30 a.m. local time. Firefighters set up a perimeter and worked to evacuate people.

A landslide killed nine people in a village in northern China on Monday, authorities said. The disaster occurred in the village of Caijiazhuang, Luliang municipal government in Shanxi province said on its official social media account.
