The Call for Abstracts for the IAEM-USA Academic Research Presentation Competition (Poster Contest) is now open. Open only to IAEM-USA student members, it is an opportunity to showcase research to scholars and practitioners in the emergency management community, as well as the general public.
The IAEM-USA Academic Research Presentation Competition has been revamped from previous years, with changes in the submission timeline, requirements and judging process. Awards will be given in both the undergraduate and graduate level as follows: First Place - $225; Second Place - $175; and Third Place - $100. The call for nominations for IAEM-USA Council Vice President and Secretary opened on May 2, 2016, and will close at 5:00 p.m. EDT on May 31, 2016. Individual members are eligible to hold national office, provided they have been a member for at least three consecutive years, and have served as a regional or national officer, national committee chair, or active national committee member for two consecutive years. The complete call for nominations, with details about how to get on the ballot, is posted on the IAEM-USA News web page.

FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) hosts the Master Exercise Practitioner Program (MEPP). Participants in the program are assigned to an exercise planning team where they are challenged to: demonstrate their expertise at all levels of exercise design and conduct; apply best practices and lessons learned from their organizations and experience; and use the concepts from the MEPP curriculum for their exercise planning team assignments. The program is delivered in a series of three courses covering advanced exercise design, conduct, and evaluation practices in each phase of the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP). Candidates must have three to five years of experience designing and conducting emergency management exercises consistent with the HSEEP doctrine and development of discussion-based and operations-based exercises. The application period is open until July 1, 2016. Please apply only once for the series of your choice.

IAEM Headquarters is maintaining a list of IAEM members who have a current student membership and wish to be considered for a student registration fee stipend in the amount of $300 (early-bird rate) for the conference registration fee to attend the IAEM 2016 Annual Conference, Oct. 14-19, in Savannah, Georgia. After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake ripped through Ecuador’s coastal region last month, Toronto-based GlobalMedic answered the call for aid with a posse of drones, which can survey, map and pinpoint damage as well as the location of survivors. The group’s founder, paramedic Rahul Singh, says they’re the way of the future for humanitarian aid.

After a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck Ecuador’s Pacific coast on April 16, a new ally joined the international relief effort: A citizen-science network called Zooniverse.
On 25 April, Zooniverse launched a website that asks volunteers to analyse rapidly-snapped satellite imagery of the disaster, which led to more than 650 reported deaths and 16,000 injuries. The aim is to help relief workers on the ground to find the most heavily damaged regions and identify which roads are passable.

The InterAgency Board (IAB) recently published a new document, Preparedness Activities for High Threat Events Requires Additional Study, which discusses the IAB’s recommendation for further review and analysis of the causes of death from active shooter and high threat incidents that have occurred in the United States, with continued refinement of the systems of care and preparation for these types of events. IAB highly recommends additional study and data analysis to guide the continued development of U.S. preparedness activities for such events.

The InterAgency Board (IAB) recently published a new document, Conformity Assessment Guidance for Public Safety Equipment, which discusses the guidance and its assistance in determining an appropriate method for assessing public safety equipment’s conformance with standards or other requirements. The guidance is intended to benefit persons or organizations responsible for developing and maintaining a specific conformity assessment scheme.

FEMA recently announced the newly launched Children and Disasters website. The site hosts various resources to help state, local and tribal governments – as well as stakeholders responsible for the temporary care of children — integrate children’s disaster-related needs into preparedness, planning, response, and recovery efforts.

RadResponder, a product of collaboration between FEMA, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency, is a free network that provides a flexible, efficient and integrated approach to the input and management of radiological data through daily environmental monitoring activities to all federal, state, local, tribal and territorial organizations. The program was originally conceived in 2011, shortly after the Fukushima Dai’ichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Five years later, RadResponder is now being used operationally across the country, supporting a variety of organizations at all levels of government. The RadResponder Network is the national standard and whole community solution for the management of radiological data.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has scheduled a webinar on “Hurricane Model Research and Application in NOAA,” on May 10, 2016, 10:00 a.m. EDT. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory will provide an overview of the research and application of various hurricane models used to provide guidance on track and intensity. The 18th Annual Emergency Management Symposium, “Whole of Community – Talking about my Generation,” will take place June 6-9, 2016, at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute, National Emergency Training Center, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Persuade!” Nathaniel Forbes, MBCI, CBCP, Forbes Calamity Prevention, Singapore, examines these elements of a persuasive presentation, speech or training course: developing a story that your audience will remember; finding the emotional appeal in your story; and choosing images that reinforce your message. An effective public information officer must have the ability to persuade the public, elected officials and the media, whether in an emergency, in a classroom or at a conference. The Third International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies for Disaster Management (ICT-DM 2016) is scheduled for Dec. 13-15, 2016, in Vienna, Austria. ICT-DMT 2016 aims to bring together academics and practitioners who are involved in emergency services, ad hoc planning and disaster management and recovery, in order to learn about the latest research developments, share experiences and information about this area and develop recommendations. Rescuers continued to sift through rubble on Sunday for the 73 people who remain missing.
