IAEM seeks nominations for 2021 IAEM-USA Volunteer Emergency Management Awards
IAEM
The emergency management profession is made up of hard-working men and women who made the career choice to brave dangers, both natural and man-made. They put in the long hours day after day and often face risks. It’s undoubtedly a hard profession that IAEM seeks to recognize, but so often the job doesn’t end for these people at the end of the day. They continue to put in long hours using their skills to volunteer to help others. The IAEM-USA Voluntary Awards seek to recognize these heroic efforts. The Emergency Management Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes voluntary exceptional emergency management services and contributions to the community throughout the prior year. The IAEM-USA Voluntary Organization of the Year Award recognizes a U.S. voluntary organization that made extraordinary emergency management contributions within the United States. This year emergency managers were stretched thin, and many went above in beyond in their volunteer efforts and deserve to be honored. Nominate a worthy volunteer here today.

Earthquake, tsunami hazards from subduction zones might be higher than current estimates*
University of New Mexico via PreventionWeb
Two of the most destructive forces of nature – earthquakes and tsunamis – might be more of a threat than current estimates according to new research conducted by scientists at The University of New Mexico and the Nanyang Technological University titled Slip rate deficit and earthquake potential on shallow megathrusts. The research was published today in Nature Geoscience.
The researchers developed a new method to assess earthquake and tsunami hazards represented by the most distant part of offshore subduction zones and found that the hazard might have been systematically underestimated in some areas, meaning that tsunami risk assessments should be redone given the new results.
