Smart, proactive land management crucial as flooding intensifies
Route Fifty
Flooding certainly isn’t a new phenomenon, but it’s getting worse as human infrastructure expands and climate change contributes to rising sea levels and more extreme weather events. Major floods have plenty of immediate consequences, including property damage, displacement, injury and death. But many consequences are felt long after the floodwaters have receded.

6 ways a flood insurance rate can be lower with risk rating 2.0 — Equity in Action
FEMA via PreventionWeb
Flood insurance rates can be costly and difficult to understand. FEMA is working to change that with the new pricing methodology: Risk Rating 2.0 – Equity in Action. The new rating system is easy to understand, equitable and better reflects a property’s unique flood risk.
You may already know that just a single inch of floodwater can cause $25,000 in damage to your home. Understanding the risk your own property faces and how much coverage you need, is more complex. Risk Rating 2.0 – Equity in Action breaks down this information and helps you make informed decisions about protecting your property.

Invest in public health to prepare for the next pandemic
Government Technology
To Jennifer Kertanis, advocating for greater attention to public health over her three-decade career has often felt like screaming into a void.
“Despite many, many years of advocacy, funding for local public health has absolutely been stagnant at the state level, and/or been diminished,” said Kertanis, who directs the Farmington Valley Health Department. “We have been exceedingly challenged to really help people understand the full breadth and depth and scope of what public health is and the value and importance of it.”
