The IAEM-USA Editorial Committee has issued a call for articles for the next special focus issue on the theme of “What We Should Do Now to Shape the Future.” Here are a few ideas for articles that could be written on this theme: climate change and technology, managing a future pandemic; preparing now for warning/alert issues of the future; helping to prevent disasters that might occur in certain areas (dam safety, earthquakes, etc.); and the most important thing that we should be preparing for right now (and why). There are other ideas on the IAEM Bulletin web page, or you may have an idea for a different topic that fits into the special focus issue theme. If you have not written for the IAEM Bulletin previously, please read the author guidelines. Email your article (750-1,500 words) to Bulletin Editor Karen Thompson, no later than July 10, 2019.

FEMA published additional data on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) via its OpenFEMA platform, to include more than 2 million claims records, dating back to 1978, and more than 47 million policy records for transactions taking place during the past 10 years. This data supplements and provides insight into current NFIP data at the county level available through OpenFEMA. The publication of this NFIP data promotes transparency, reduces complexity for public requests, and improves how stakeholders interact with and contextually understand the program. The OpenFEMA platform is intended to meet the requirements established in the HR 4174, Foundations for Evidence Based Policy Act, Title II Open Government Data Act. To view this data, visit the OpenFEMA website.

FEMA’s National Integration Center seeks public feedback for an update of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Implementation Fact Sheet for Nonprofit Organizations. This National Engagement Period will conclude at 5:00 p.m. EDT, July 12, 2019. National engagement provides an opportunity for interested parties to comment on the draft fact sheet, to ensure it is relevant for all implementing nonprofit partners. NIMS is an integral component of the National Preparedness System and the nation’s ability to achieve the National Preparedness Goal. The NIMS Implementation Fact Sheet for Nonprofit Organizations identifies the specific activities that are involved in NIMS implementation for state, local, tribal and territorial nonprofit organizations. FEMA last revised the factsheet in 2006 and is now updating and renaming the document to ensure it is consistent with the NIMS refresh, to incorporate stakeholder input, and to make it a clearer and more useful tool for nonprofit organizations as they implement NIMS. Based on the 2017 Hurricanes Season FEMA After-Action Report, the NIMS refresh, and feedback from both nonprofits and the private sector, a recommendation to the public will be presented during the National Engagement period to create separate NIMS Implementation Fact Sheets – one for nonprofit organizations and one for private sector organizations. The latter is being developed for release this year. Visit the FEMA website to review the fact sheet.
