If you have an idea for an article, but you’re not sure it will fit into this issue, email a paragraph or two describing what you want to write about, and we’ll supply you with feedback. Read the author’s guidelines, and email your 750 to 1,500-word article to Editor Karen Thompson.

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and AT&T on June 19 realized a major milestone that came three months ahead of schedule, by providing U.S. states and territories with individual state plans to enable rapid deployment of the first nationwide high-speed data and voice network for America’s first responders. The network buildout proposed in the state plans will create thousands of new jobs nationwide and drive investments across the states and territories. The network will modernize public safety communications and provide first responders with technologies to help them save lives and protect communities. Since 2013, FirstNet has worked hand-in-hand with the states, territories, localities, federal authorities and the public safety community to make sure the network is specifically built for their needs. Developed with this input, the customized plans outline the coverage, features and mission-critical capabilities FirstNet, together with its partner, AT&T, will bring to first responders and other public safety personnel. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently released an updated edition of Hazus® Estimated Annualized Earthquake Losses for the United States. The report was developed by FEMA’s Hazus® Team, the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), using Hazus® data, U.S. Census data, and updated USGS Probabilistic Earthquake Hazard Maps. The report serves as an effective tool to promote earthquake awareness, preparedness, implementation of cost-effective mitigation measures, and strategies to help reduce seismic risk in the nation’s most at-risk communities. The updated version was designed to provide a more accurate estimate of hazard influences to losses, thus providing emergency managers with comprehensive nationwide data for decision making.
