IAEM-USA on June 20 submitted a letter to the Federal Communications Commission on RM-11681, detailing the USA Council’s objections to a private company’s (Ligado) request to share the National Weather Service (NWS) satellite downlink frequencies. IAEM believes that sharing the frequencies will interfere with ground station reception of NWS satellite data, potentially blocking reception of the satellite data. Download the IAEM-USA letter here. AEM®/CEM® candidates in the Class of 2016 who are interested in receiving their diploma at the IAEM-USA Annual Conference during the awards ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, in Savannah, Georgia, must have their initial AEM®/CEM® credential application approved no later than the July 2016 online review meeting (application submission deadline is June 30, 2016) and must take and return their completed exam to IAEM Headquarters by Sept. 13, 2016, as well as receive a passing grade. No supplemental reviews will occur prior to the scheduled September/October 2016 online review meeting.

On May 17, 2016, the IAEM USA-Board approved a proposal submitted by the IAEM Canada Board to help align the degree requirement for CEM® candidates. The IAEM Canada Council recommended the following for the CEM® educational requirements:
- Any three- or four-year bachelor program
- Any postgraduate degree in emergency management (or a close iteration of emergency management, i.e. “disaster and emergency management)
Effective Jan. 1, 2017, Canadian CEM® applicants will be required to submit any three- or four-year bachelor program or any post-graduate degree in emergency management or related field. Please note, once the new education requirement goes into effect, candidates will no longer have the option of substituting extra years of emergency management work experience in lieu of the education requirement. If you are planning on pursuing the CEM® certification credential, are a Canadian resident, and do not hold a degree, we encourage you to submit your CEM® application through the online portal before Jan. 1, 2017.

The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) National Protection and Programs Directorate has created a new web page to assist in outreach efforts to U.S. communities and to reach out to small- and medium-sized businesses, including restaurants, clubs, grocery stores, places of worship, and other venues. Now online, the Hometown Security page makes it easier for the public to find free, useful community tools and resources about security preventive measures. University of Central Florida (UCF) identified a need for a bomb threat training video to help them educate students, faculty, and staff about how to react to an anonymous, threatening call. In partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), UCF developed a training video for employees that teaches them the right steps to help law enforcement catch the people who call in threats. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and DHS also will share the video with their partners across the globe. The video, now available on the DHS website, trains those who receive a threat to react calmly, gather important information, and then report the situation to police.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released Information Bulletin #409, Grant Resources Available to Support Preparedness and Response Capabilities for Zika Virus Disease. The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to provide FEMA grant recipients with information about federal grant resources and allowable expenditures to support preparedness and response capabilities for Zika Virus Disease, including grant resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Executive Academy program was developed in collaboration with prominent higher education institutions. The Basic Academy offers the tools to develop comprehensive foundational skills needed in emergency management.
