The IAEM Editorial Committee is seeking articles for the next special focus issue on the theme of “What We Should Do Now to Shape the Future,” and has extended the deadline for article submissions to Monday, July 22, 2019. Here are a few ideas for articles that could be written on this theme: climate change and technology, managing a future pandemic; preparing now for warning/alert issues of the future; helping to prevent disasters that might occur in certain areas (dam safety, earthquakes, etc.); and the most important thing that we should be preparing for right now (and why). There are other ideas on the IAEM Bulletin web page, or you may have an idea for a different topic that fits into the special focus issue theme. The IAEM Scholarship Commission seeks applicants to fill several commission openings for the Class of 2021 (term ends in 2021) and two openings in the Class of 2020. Applications need to be submitted by July 31, 2019, via email to IAEM Scholarship Program Director Dawn Shiley. The application must include a letter of intent expressing the desire to participate, the ability to devote the time to the program, and an explanation of why they should be considered for the position they seek. In addition, the applicant must submit a current resume, with a two-page maximum. Specific requirements for Scholarship Commissioners, positions available, and additional information on successful applications are available on the IAEM website. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun an open review of the 2013 Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) doctrine to incorporate lessons learned and best practices from the past six years of HSEEP’s use among the whole community’s exercise practitioners. HSEEP provides a foundation for exercise planning, conduct and evaluation, and a methodology to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach during the development and execution process. Feedback is requested to ensure that the review and update to the HSEEP doctrine, documents, and training course best meets the needs of the whole community. FEMA will conduct a series of one-hour webinars that are open to all stakeholders and anyone interested in providing feedback and listening to subject matter experts discuss HSEEP. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on July 8 published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the Federal Register, Revisions to Methodology for Payments to Write Your Own (WYO) Companies. FEMA intends to modify the way it pays private insurance companies participating in the Write Your Own (WYO) Program. FEMA seeks comments regarding possible approaches to incorporating actual flood insurance expense data into the payment methodology that FEMA uses to determine the amount of payments to WYO companies. Comments on this notice must be submitted by Sept. 6, 2019, either online or by mail to Regulatory Affairs Division, Office of Chief Counsel, Federal Emergency Management Agency, 8NE, 500 C Street SW, Washington, DC 20472.

The National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) has issued a call for nominations for the Lacy E. Suiter Distinguished Service Award, which is presented in recognition of professionals who have dedicated their careers to making citizens, communities and states safer from disasters and emergencies. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made cumulative outstanding contributions directly to emergency preparedness, mitigation, response, or recovery at a local, state, regional or national level.
