A map using satellite technology to warn of fire risks aims at helping Southeast Asian governments better deploy their resources to combat raging blazes, which cloak the region in haze every year, an expert on forest fires said on Tuesday.
Slash-and-burn agriculture, much of it clearing land for palm oil crops, blanketed Singapore, Malaysia and northern Indonesia in a choking "haze" for months last year.

Findings from a newly-released survey indicate that there are specific levers that government and private sector partners can use to influence and increase overall individual and community preparedness. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Division (ICPD) released the findings from its 2015 National Household Survey of 5,000 Americans in late June. The survey is designed to measure household and individual preparedness and awareness. Among the most significant findings, the survey found a positive relationship between awareness of preparedness information and the action of taking steps to prepare for a disaster. ICPD will be going back into the field later this summer to administer the 2016 National Household Survey.

The U.S. is experiencing a remarkable, record drought from hurricane hits, with only four strikes in the past seven years.
That's the fewest in any seven-year stretch since records began a few years before Abraham Lincoln was elected president. One of the only comparably quiet eras occurred in the late 1970s through the early 1980s, according to meteorologist Neal Dorst of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, which prepared the analysis of weather data for USA Today.

The United Nations envoy dealing with disaster risk reduction has launched a new multiyear campaign that aims to reduce disaster losses, improve management of disaster risk, and save lives.
“Despite many successes there are still far too many lives being lost in predictable events because of failures to deploy early warning systems, learn lessons from past events and to grasp the growing threat of climate change and its impact on extreme weather events including storms, floods and drought,” said Robert Glasser, the UN special representative for disaster risk reduction.

The coconut plant itself is a survivalist’s dream. In one tough package, you get a high-calorie food, a source for potable water, strong fibers for making rope and a hard shell that makes a great charcoal. To top it off, the coconut works as a flotation device.
Researchers are now hoping that the unique energy-absorbing properties of the coconut shell will add one more bullet point to the coconut’s resume: Earthquake prevention technology.

The InterAgency Board (IAB) recently published a report, Recommended Actions Related to Reducing the Known Risk of Cancer in Fire Fighters, which discusses the occupational exposure to carcinogens that significantly increases fire fighters’ risk of several cancers in correlation with the duration of firefighting activities. The document encourages a holistic approach to cancer prevention within the fire service and calls for fundamental changes in most aspects of firefighting, to include design and use of PPE, operational issues, post-fire decontamination, and education and medical oversight.

FEMA’s Integrated Emergency Management Course (IEMC) is a four-and-a-half day training that simulates realistic crisis situations that emergency operations center (EOC) personnel and community leadership/elected officials may encounter during disasters or other events. IEMC courses help increase the skills of participating officials, and provide a forum to evaluate the effectiveness of their specific emergency policies, plans, and procedures that protect life and property. The course’s target audience includes state, local, tribal, and territorial government personnel; their elected and appointed officials; supervisory, operations, and emergency support personnel; nonprofit organizations; the private sector; law enforcement personnel; firefighters; attorneys; public information officers; planners; and more. IEMC classes are principally delivered at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute at the National Emergency Training Center, Emmitsburg, Maryland; however delivery may occur in the community. Questions should be directed to FEMA-EMI-IEMB@fema.dhs.gov. If your jurisdiction is interested in applying for the program and obtaining information on the application process and its timeline, please visit the IEMC website.

In order to improve national readiness, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has released a radiation preparedness survey in partnership with the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN) to collect information on current radiation preparedness efforts being conducted by state and local health departments in the United States. In the event of a catastrophic radiation emergency, it is likely that the incident would impact a large population both in the immediate vicinity and far beyond. Such an event could result in potentially thousands of people seeking assistance, overwhelming emergency response and public health operations. The online survey, which takes 10-15 minutes to complete, will close July 29, 2016. Respondents will be eligible to participate in a raffle for an iPad Air. Questions should be directed to preparedness@naccho.org.

In cooperation with the Millersville University Center for Disaster Research and Education, Lancaster County Firemen's Association, and the Fire Association for the State of Pennsylvania, data is being gathered on recruiting and retention for the volunteer fire service. There are two surveys, one for volunteer fire chiefs, and the other for volunteer firefighters. While we all know that volunteerism is down, and many have tried various methods to recruit and retain dedicated volunteers, the hope of this study is to determine what methods actually work, and then spread the message on the findings. This survey can be distributed to anyone you know in the fire service, and will be distributed throughout the country, as this is obviously not just a Pennsylvania issue. The surveys, which take approximately ten-fifteen (10-15) minutes to complete, will close on Aug. 31, 2016. Three randomly selected respondents will receive $250 gift certificates to The FireStore. The Fire Department with the largest percentage of members responding, will receive a $500 gift certificate to The Firestore. Requests for copies of results may be emailed to: duane.hagelgans@millersville.edu.

DataTech911 is working on a project for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) First Responders Group (FRG) titled Social Media and CAD Correlation. Social Media and CAD Correlation (SMaCC) is when meaningful events are identified, data gathered from social media and 9-1-1 CAD incidents trigger correlation analytics which will inform incident command and improve responder readiness, situational awareness, decision making and overall scene safety. One of the key steps in this research is to gather input from industry leaders on the use of social media in their organizations. Please help out and complete the survey. Contact Michael Salonish if you would like to be interviewed, to be considered for a beta site, or to participate in an on-site workshop.
