Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently announced that their states intend to opt in to the FirstNet network. These states join Virginia and Wyoming in pledging to accept FirstNet’s advanced technologies that will help first responders save lives and protect communities. For states and territories that elect to opt in, the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and its network provider, AT&T, will deploy, operate and maintain FirstNet at no cost for 25 years. Once a state/territory opts in, FirstNet becomes available to its public safety community. States/territories that choose to opt out are responsible for deploying, operating, maintaining, and improving a FirstNet-compatible public safety network in their state/territory at their own cost. For the latest news, visit FirstNet.gov.

Tornadoes aren’t hurricanes. Hurricanes are long-lasting, low-pressure swirls that follow somewhat predictable paths. But tornadoes can pop up and disappear in just a few minutes. It hasn’t been easy to give people fair warning about tornadoes, especially those folks caught in the crosshairs of violently-rotating columns of damaging, high-speed winds.

The deadline for articles on “Lessons Learned” for the IAEM Bulletin was extended last week to Monday, July 24, 2017, so you still have time to be a part of this special focus issue. Articles might include, but are not limited to: what we can learn from other countries; what others in our country can learn from our experiences; how emergency management programs are implementing standards; or how standards can bridge the interfaces between countries and between jurisdictions. If you’re not sure your idea for an article will fit what we’re requesting, email a paragraph or two describing what you want to write about, and we’ll supply you with feedback. Read the author’s guidelines, and email your 750 to 1,500 word article to Editor Karen Thompson by July 24, 2017. And remember, an article published in the Bulletin can help you meet the Publications requirement if you’re an AEM® or CEM® candidate.

If someone were to walk into a high school classroom today and ask the students about their future professions, there may be one or possibly two students who wish to pursue emergency management. However, as much as the field has grown since 2001, emergency management is still not the dream career of the average high school student. It is much more likely that these students would consider more traditional fields in the business, health, or finance world.

Our economy, livelihood and well-being depend on food and its supply chains. Supply chains may break if a natural disaster destroys a crop in its primary production region, or if someone tampers with food to cause harm or raise profits. In such cases we need to find out quickly about these incidents and find alternative sources of food ingredients and supplies.

The researchers would like you to inform us about the needs and requirements of your organization to make this portal more useful. What data/layers should be included? What functionality is currently missing or could be improved? Would you like to see the option of “customization” or “tailoring” a product for purchase? Do you have other ideas? Before completing the survey, please test out the WMS (Flood Portal) at the DFO, if you have not already done so, by clicking on one of the continents at this link.
