This week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and several partner organizations (including IAEM) released two video presentations from the Youth Preparedness PrepTalks Symposium held on May 30, 2018, in Long Branch, New Jersey. Michele Gay, a mother of three, former teacher, and co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools (a nonprofit started by Sandy Hook parents to support school crisis prevention, response, and recovery), spoke on “Rethinking School Safety." She relays her personal experience as the parent of a child killed in the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Kristina Anderson, founder of the The Koshka Foundation for Safe Schools (a non-profit dedicated to helping local community and school stakeholders work together to prevent, respond, and heal in the aftermath of school violence), presented “Safety is Personal: Lessons Learned as a Survivor of the Virginia Tech Tragedy." Download the new fact sheet developed by ASPR TRACIE that provides information on general durable medical equipment (DME) categories and focuses on electricity-dependent DME that may be affected by disasters and emergencies, including power failures. The fact sheet also includes information to assist healthcare system preparedness stakeholders plan for medically vulnerable populations who rely on DME.

The Secret Service’s newly-released report on creating programs for conducting a threat assessment in schools provides a guide for officials to compare to their own systems.
The report was released by the agency’s National Threat Assessment Center, which was created in 1998 to provide guidance and training on threat assessments to criminal justice and public safety professionals.

Suiter Distinguished Service in Emergency Management Award. The award is named posthumously in honor of Lacy E. Suiter, one of the nation's most experienced and respected emergency management and homeland security leaders. The NEMA Board of Directors, past presidents and former award recipients are responsible for reviewing nominations and making award determinations. The group is interested in the specific activities and accomplishments of nominees rather than their general background. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations should include a one-page summary of those accomplishments or activities you believe merit consideration for an award.
