When former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack was about to take office in 1999, he went to the National Governors Association’s New Governor’s School, and sat next to then-Gov. Zell Miller of Georgia. Vilsack had one big question to ask his seatmate: “What are the one or two things I should focus on? Should it be health care? Jobs? Education?” As Vilsack recalls, “Gov. By inaction, Congress has left federal, state and local public health agencies scrambling to find resources to cope with the Zika virus carried by mosquitoes, for which there is no vaccine or effective cure. In order to improve national readiness, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has released a radiation preparedness survey in partnership with the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN) to collect information on current radiation preparedness efforts being conducted by state and local health departments in the United States. In the event of a catastrophic radiation emergency, it is likely that the incident would impact a large population both in the immediate vicinity and far beyond. Such an event could result in potentially thousands of people seeking assistance, overwhelming emergency response and public health operations. The online survey, which takes 10-15 minutes to complete, will close Aug. 5, 2016. Respondents will be eligible for participate in a raffle for an iPad Air. Questions should be directed to preparedness@naccho.org.
