Plans are evolving quickly to reimagine the 68th Annual Conference & EMEX as a virtual event to be held Nov. 16-18, 2020. Registration will open in early August, and the event promises to feature all the bells and whistles of an in-person event, including top-notch speakers, networking events, exhibit hall live sessions, EMvision Talks, the Poster Showcase, CEUs, and more. Registration fees have been significantly reduced to allow for multiple people participating from every organization. Watch the conference website for details.

Applications to become a member of the IAEM Scholarship Commission are due tomorrow, July 31
IAEM
The IAEM Scholarship Commission seeks applicants to fill several commission openings for the Class of 2022. Information on qualifications and openings are detailed in the Call for Commissioners. Applications must be submitted by July 31, 2020. Questions may be directed to IAEM Scholarship Program Director Dawn Shiley.

FEMA extends suspension of in-person training and education
IAEM
FEMA extended the suspension of in-person training and education at both the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Alabama, through at least Oct. 1. The agency will not reopen its campuses on Aug. 2, as announced previously. FEMA will continue to offer and expand virtual or online training options.
  • Check the National Preparedness Course Catalog and select online/distance learning.
  • Check the CDP’s virtual and online training offerings by clicking on VILT for Virtual Instructor-Led classes and webinars. Click on Online Training for online courses, which are available 24/7.
  • TThe CDP also offers a number of online training videos.
FEMA will continue to monitor the coronavirus pandemic and communicate updates or changes in conditions that may affect reopening of FEMA campuses.
 
 
State and local mitigation plan review guides are being updated by FEMA
IAEM
FEMA is updating the state and local hazard mitigation plan review guides. These plan review guides are FEMA’s official interpretation of the requirements for state and local hazard mitigation plans. FEMA’s online presentation provides a high-level overview of hazard mitigation planning guidance and shares information on submitting feedback to the existing policies. FEMA will accept ideas and feedback on current documents by sending an email to fema-mitplan-guide-updates@fema.dhs.gov through Aug. 14. Additional information on hazard mitigation planning is available on the FEMA website.

AMS Council names Robert Goldhammer, CEM, as the winner of the Kenneth C. Spengler Award
IAEM
IAEM member Robert Goldhammer, CEM, will receive the Kenneth C. Spengler Award from the Council of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), “for forging extensive collaboration and partnerships linking emergency management and the weather, water, and climate enterprise.” The presentation of the award will occur in conjunction with the 101st AMS Annual Meeting, Jan. 10-14, 2021, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bob is the IAEM liaison to the AMS Emergency Management Subcommittee. IAEM is proud of the work Bob does on the subcommittee and in connecting our organization with AMS. Congratulations, Bob!

EMAP announces August EM Standard virtual training schedule
IAEM
The Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) will be holding four sessions of its Emergency Management Standard Virtual Cohort Virtual Training from August through November 2020. The schedule for the month of August is Aug. 5, Aug. 12, Aug. 19, and Aug. 26, with all sessions at 12:00-5:00 p.m. EDT. The goal is to train accreditation managers, assessors, and program staff on the 2019 Emergency Management Standard in a safe environment during COVID-19. Each training session will be four weeks in length, requiring the participation of attendees for one afternoon session and small group work weekly. At the completion of the training, participants may be certified as an accreditation manager and/or assessor. The registration fee is $250. The Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society’s Intersection Center Virtual Forum Series, in partnership with Unibail Rodamco Westfield (URW), will present a July 31, 3:00-4:00 p.m. EDT, webinar, “A Discussion About How the Private Sector Can Effectively Share Life-Saving Information Using Research.” Register online. Dr. Lucy Jones, founder of the Lucy Jones Center, seismologist, author of The Big Ones, and MIT research associate, will be joined by Dr. Deanna Sellnow, professor and assistant director of the Nicholson School of Communications, University of Central Florida, to explain how people process information and how communicators can most effectively provide the information needed to have others take the necessary steps for response. This session will provide tools, techniques, and underlying science to empower business and local leaders to manage people who are reacting differently to the same risk. Deaths and missing people reported from Tropical Depression Hanna in Mexico
