Register now at www.iaem.com/webinars and tune in today at 1:00 p.m. for IAEM’s Thursday Learning Webinar on “Mapping the Social Media of Disaster Survivors.” Learn how the landscape of social media conversations shifts throughout the course of a disaster. When do disaster survivors experience the greatest points of frustration, anger, joy, or sadness? While every disaster is unique, FEMA’s Office of External Affairs identified general patterns in online behavior over the course of many disaster responses and created a Survivor Experience Map. Some of the largest corporations in the world create user experience maps to better understand pain points in their customer service process. FEMA combined this concept with their social media listening efforts to better understand the hurdles survivors face throughout the preparation and recovery process. Now, the agency not only responds better in the moment, but also can better anticipate survivor information needs. In this presentation, Sara Smith, social listening specialist, FEMA, will review the Survivor Experience Map and demonstrate how a robust social listening program has helped this federal agency better understand and serve disaster survivors.

The last special focus issue of 2017 will be based on the theme of the IAEM 2017 Annual Conference & EMEX, “Navigating a Journey with the Whole Community.” Articles should be related in some way to the conference theme. You could pick one of the following four conference focus areas: The Emergency Management Journey: What have you learned, and where do you want to go next; Sweeping the Depths for Treasure and Scanning the Horizon: The cutting edge of research and practice; All Hands on Deck: Collaborative practices; and Uncharted Waters: How do we steer through the unknown, the new normal. Alternately, you may have another idea about how to address the general conference theme. The Editorial Work Group looks forward to your article submissions. Please read the author’s guidelines, and email your article to Karen Thompson, editor, no later than Sept. 10, 2017.

The interconnected global environment can increase the number of vulnerabilities as well as the destabilizing effects of both natural and human-caused disasters. As such, when a high-impact, low-probability event occurs, the consequences can be devastating. To prepare for such events, planners must observe trends, predict futures, and create scenarios for better mitigating any potential threat.

Currently, most utility companies diminish such accidents by scheduling regular tree-trimming operations. IAEM student member and active duty Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Michael Turanitza seeks several additional volunteers to participate in his research study as he works to complete his Ph.D. in emergency management from Capella University. The study is entitled "Perceived Barriers to Disaster Response Technology Adoption and Potential for Improved Operational Effectiveness." The research questions being explored are: 1) Beyond the known financial constraints, what do first responders perceive as being barriers to disaster response technology adoption?; and 2) From the perspective of first responders, in what ways could removing these barriers affect disaster response operation efficiency? Volunteers would participate in a 60-90 minute face-to-face (or video teleconference) interview at a private-public venue. Participation would be kept confidential, and this study would benefit emergency management leadership and educational institutions in the development of course materials. Interested personnel are encouraged to email michael.turanitza@yahoo.com and put “Research Participant” in the subject line.
