The IAEM 2016 Annual Conference offers an incredible line-up of speakers. The excitement starts on Oct. 17 with plenary sessions by Ted Koppel, a 42-year veteran of ABC News and anchor and managing editor of Nightline from 1980 to 2005, and Avish Parashar, an energetic and humorous speaker who uses his 20+ years of experience performing, teaching and studying improv comedy to show organizations how to deal with the unexpected. W. Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Lee Feldman, president-elect of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and city manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also will present on Day 1. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, IAEM presents the very popular EMvision Talks, modeled on the well-known TED™ Talk format. Wednesday’s plenary session will feature Leonard Marcus, Ph.D., founding co-director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a joint program of Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. For the first time, the Zika virus has prompted public health officials to warn pregnant women to avoid traveling to a part of the continental United States. The travel advisory comes in response to a growing outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease in South Florida.
The state on Monday said there are 10 more people who have been infected with the Zika virus who likely contracted it from local mosquitoes, bringing the total number of such cases in the state to 14.

The IAEM-USA Awards & Recognition Committee is seeking nominations for three (3) new USA-only award categories that will recognize the contributions of volunteers who assist emergency managers in the United States. The new award categories are: Emergency Management Volunteer of the Year, Emergency Management Volunteer Organization of the Year, and Emergency Management Uniformed Services Auxiliary Member of the Year. The nominations period began on July 15 and will end on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EDT. There will be no deadline extensions. No self-nominations are accepted in these award categories. Nominations must be submitted using the official nominations form by email to Karen Thompson, Thompson@iaem.com, with any additional letters of support included with the official nominations form.

The IAEM-Global Editorial Work Group seeks feature articles on “Today’s Emergency Management: Working in a Complex World,” the theme of the IAEM 2016 Annual Conference. Articles might focus on an aspect of one of these areas: complex events or incidents: the lessons we have yet to learn or failed to implement; current research and practice; and successful collaborative practices. Shortly after the first attack on the World Trade Center complex in 1993, the Port Authority of New York spent over $100 million beefing up security in and around its buildings. To protect against another vehicle bombing, giant five-ton, steel-reinforced planters were installed in a daisy chain enclosing their perimeter. A new custom movable gate permitted emergency-only vehicle access through a wall of heavy video surveillance. A repeater system was put in place to boost radio signals of first-responders entering the buildings. The investment in new technology would stave off, if not outright prevent, another attack. At least that was the thinking. Until the unthinkable.
