FEMA extends emergency non-congregate sheltering assistance
IAEM
FEMA has extended funding for Emergency Non-Congregate Sheltering during the COVID-19 public health emergency until Nov. 30, 2021. Under this policy, FEMA reimburses state, tribal and territorial governments for the partial cost of providing non-congregate sheltering for people who must evacuate during a disaster. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, FEMA established a policy that allowed state, local, tribal and territorial governments to apply for reimbursement of costs associated with non-congregate sheltering of disaster survivors under FEMA’s Public Assistance program. Originally scheduled to end on Dec. 31, 2020, the policy was extended until Jul. 31, 2021. Due to the continuing need to protect public safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, FEMA has further extended this policy until Nov. 30, 2021.

Submit COVID public education campaigns in IAEM's COVID Conversations Recognitions Program
IAEM
IAEM COVID Conversations is something to talk about! IAEM has launched a search to recognize the truly amazing work that has been done by emergency managers across the many twists and turns of COVID-19. This effort is meant to shine a light on the creative work that spread the desperately needed messaging. We are seeking to find any sort of media that has been/or is being used to help educate the public about COVID-19. The spectrum is broad. IAEM is looking for ANY campaign that has had a positive effect from the very beginning of the COVID pandemic-when we desperately needed to get the word out about this disease to the present, and every step along the way. All entries can be submitted online. Questions can be directed to Rebecca Campbell.

Wildfires are so dangerous now that the National Guard prepares for them like hurricanes
Defense One
The growing intensity of wildfire season on the West Coast has forced the National Guard to change the way it prepares aircraft and service members to fight those blazes, the service’s top general said Thursday.
In short: treat it like a hurricane, and model their approach after state guards across the southeast and Gulf Coast, who are used to back-to-back disasters, Chief of the National Guard Bureau Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson told reporters at the Pentagon.

Psychological effects of COVID-19 on frontline workers
Domestic Preparedness
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the lives of healthcare workers and first responders – impacts they are still feeling. As workers on the frontlines, these people took a harder hit than the rest of the American population when COVID-19 swept across the nation. Several studies have shown that the pandemic increased a person’s likelihood to have negative impacts on mental health and led to the development of new coping strategies among healthcare workers and first responders.

The Hill
Despite a shared emphasis across government and civil society on mitigating the effects of climatic disasters, there is still a lack of true focus on disaster risk reduction education. For the amount of money spent annually in the federal budget and through emergency supplemental funds (through which a significant portion of disaster funding is allocated), little is spent on such education.
