Louisianans' way of life on the coast is threatened by the very plans meant to save their wetlands and barrier islands from rising seas*
The Conversation
Waves of disaster have earned Louisiana a reputation as the place to watch for how climate change will impact coastal areas. Hurricane Ida was merely a punctuation mark in a series of devastating tropical cyclones, tragic inland floods, epic oil spills and deadly epidemics.
Despite these all-too-frequent catastrophes, many residents of Louisiana’s vulnerable coastal areas remain firmly committed to rebuilding after each disaster. The powerful pulls of family, faith, traditional foods, local music, culture and landscapes create a strong attachment.

New flood insurance program to cut premiums for a million policyholders
The Hill
Stronger storms. Heavier rainfall. Deadlier and more destructive flooding. This is our new reality, and one that’s here to stay — not only along our coasts but across the U.S., where flooding is by far the most costly natural disaster, causing $900 billion in damage since 2000. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is key to helping Americans and their communities recover from such events.

FEMA releases case studies on Santa Clara Pueblo's wildfire and flood recovery efforts
IAEM
The Santa Clara Canyon and Creek are the lifelines of the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribe, in New Mexico. The 2011 Las Conchas Wildfire severely damaged the natural landscape along the creek's tributaries, dramatically increasing flooding and erosion risk throughout the steep canyon. The tribe received four additional Presidential Disaster Declarations spanning from 2012 to 2014 due to flash flooding incidents resulting from the wildfire damage. Recently released case studies on the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribe's inspiring story explain how the tribe managed these risks while recovering. “Santa Clara Pueblo: A Tribe's Journey to Prepare, Mitigate, and Recover” examines how the tribal government with limited prior experience embraced a collaborative approach after a devastating fire and subsequent floods to successfully build back better. “Santa Clara Pueblo: Restoring Native Ecosystems to Build Resilience” analyzes how the tribe used creativity, perseverance, and a long-term mindset to manage and build resilience with nature-based solutions through a challenging wildfire and flood recovery.
