FEMA updates Fiscal Year 2022 indicator amounts
IAEM
FEMA recently updated the Fiscal Year 2022 per capita indicator amounts. These amounts regulate the minimum and maximum awards amounts for various grants through the agency’s Individual Assistance and Public Assistance programs. They also outline the amounts used to calculate disaster declarations for local, state, tribal, and territorial governments. The Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act prescribes that FEMA adjust these limits annually. FEMA based the adjustments on a Sept. 14 increase in the U.S. Department of Labor Consumer Price Index.

Disaster fatigue is getting worse with more billion-dollar extreme weather events
The Hill
Spectacularly costly disasters are our new normal.
Major hurricanes are devastating coastal communities and bringing flooding thousands of miles inland. Wildfires are burning for months. Heatwaves are scorching places where people don’t have air conditioning. Events like these have all happened just this year, and they contributed to another huge annual bill of billion-dollar disasters tracked by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The cleanup and recovery from these events can take weeks, months, even years.

Monarch Pass could serve as a new model for wildfire mitigation in treacherous areas
Sky-Hi News
About 90% of the tall spruce on Monarch Pass have been killed by beetles. If a fire were to spark there, the repercussions would be devastating. Power lines would fall. The Monarch ski area would be threatened. U.S. 50 would close. Recreation would slow and downstream economies would falter. And, perhaps most importantly, thousands of residents in the 23,000-square-mile Arkansas River Basin would for years see their watershed churning with sediment flowing from the burn scar.

The country may be making headway, but Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky warns that collective action is essential to preventing future surges.
