When heavy rains swept through this village in northern Bihar in August and September, so much floodwater covered farmers' fields that it was difficult to tell one plot of land from another.
"After the flood, when we went out to see the land there was nothing there," said Babu Ram Rai, one Madhurpatti farmer.
Rai and his neighbors — who farm a floodplain crisscrossed by rivers — are no strangers to flooding.

A statewide issue that should be addressed in state emergency planning.
When hurricanes threaten, many Floridians evacuate to public shelters, and increasing numbers show up with dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, monkeys or even a pet iguana.
This creates problems, because while public schools account for 97 percent of the hurricane shelter space in the state and schools are not generally built for hosting a variety of pets. School schedules and budgets are not set up to incorporate the time and expense of cleanup after the shelter closes.

During disaster response, individuals suffering from opioid addiction have both similar and unique needs as compared to those suffering from other types of illness. Emergency responders need the resources to manage opioid-addicted victims of a disaster, and response teams must be appropriately staffed to meet the physical and behavioral health needs of addiction. Response personnel must coordinate closely with local public health officials and other addiction stakeholders to facilitate access to local support services.

When Hurricane Harvey stranded thousands of people in Houston neighborhoods, emergency responders shared the call to duty with residents who rushed to save lives. One such initiative was Houston Harvey Rescue, organized by three men who used Google maps, Facebook and a walkie talkie app to help coordinate hundreds of rescue efforts. Skilled boaters are part of Houston’s cultural landscape, and in the aftermath of the storm, local people improvised to match available boaters to stranded residents. Houston Harvey Rescue also supplied critical local knowledge to outside volunteers, including the Cajun Navy.

In the aftermath of the massive flooding in the Houston, Texas, region brought on by Hurricane Harvey and its accompanying 50-plus inches of rainfall, there is talk and some action on what do for the next big storms.
The House recently approved a disaster relief bill that would forgive $16 billion of debt for the troubled National Flood Insurance Program, which is more than $25 billion in debt, but lawmakers also are eyeballing multiple-loss properties — those that flood repeatedly and cause multiple insurance claims to be filed.
