The premiere emergency management event of the year is only 15 days away. Have you registered to attend? The IAEM 63rd Annual Conference & EMEX will take place Nov. 13-18, in Clark County, Nevada, and it will only take a brief look at the online program to see the value of this event. Secure your spot by registering today, perhaps adding a pre-/post-conference training course and booking your lodging online. Attending in-person isn't possible for everyone, but you can attend virtually by purchasing the IAEM Digital Pass. If this will be your first IAEM Annual Conference, view the "Expanding Your Conference Experience" webinar to learn why you should join IAEM members at our flagship event.
IAEM
Register today for the next IAEM Think Tank, "Special Events from the Emergency Management Perspective," to take place Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 4:15-5:30 p.m. EST. Attendees at the IAEM Annual Conference may attend this Think Tank in person. At any given time, there can be festivals, races, concerts, large sporting events, and national special security events (NSSE) happening all around the country. These special events not only draw in more people to a community than normal, but also increase the demand on the area's response services. A special event requires additional planning, preparedness and mitigation efforts by local and federal emergency response and public safety agencies. Each of the panelists has experience in preparing for and implementing special events from a smaller scale to national special security events. Former Deputy Administrator of FEMA, Richard Serino, will facilitate the Think Tank panel. Among the panelists are: Carolyn Levering, CEM, Emergency Manager, City of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Bryan Koon, Director, Florida Division of Emergency Management. Information about these and other panelists will be available on the IAEM Think Tank webpage.

More than 300 people are dead the day after an earthquake hit Afghanistan and shook surrounding countries. At least 2,000 people are injured, NPR's Philip Reeves reported. "This is a very remote landscape," Reeves noted, "and it can take a long time before you find out exactly who's been impacted by a disaster of this kind."

A cursory look at post-2005 earthquake management reveals that successive governments have failed to come up with an effective quake risk mitigation strategies — structural as well as non-structural. For the past several years, the J&K government (Jammu and Kashmir) has been continuously boasting of introducing the disaster management policy that would outline the strategies to cope up with the calamities including earthquake. But its implementation continues to be missing on ground.

Last week, meteorologists were (rightly) cranking the sirens over Hurricane Patricia. In the span of just 30 hours, an ordinary tropical storm had mutated into the most powerful hurricane ever measured, with ferocious 200-mile-per-hour winds. And the cyclone was barreling right toward Mexico's southwestern coast. But then ... Patricia didn't end up causing anywhere near as much devastation as feared. So what happened?

Since December, Australia has been facing historic flooding that surprised the entire country. Although the risk was known, many were ill-prepared because these floods are not just another average flood, they are of very large-scale magnitude. Three-quarters of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone. In the immediate aftermath, most of the efforts need to be focused on rescuing and helping the victims of this disaster. But what happens after that?

Though 28,000 people died of heart disease while media attention focused on that outbreak, and anti-vaccine parents on the West Coast were suddenly prepared to spend any amount of money to get their children immunized against it, what happened with pandemic preparation after the fear subsided was ... not much.

In 2008 the U.S. Geological Survey reported that California has a 99 percent chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years. Just last year, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake knocked out power to more than 40,000 people in the San Francisco Bay area. This was the fourth earthquake of magnitude 6 or greater to hit the Bay Area since 1979, including the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that disrupted the 1989 World Series and knocked out power to 1.4 million people. So the city of San Francisco is not taking any chances — it's preparing for the (next) big one with microgrids.
