It's been a record-setting year for devastating and deadly wildfires across Canada and throughout the world. Wildfires need a combination of three ingredients: dry fuel, ignition and weather. Climate change can influence all three of these elements, and will increase the number of wildfires and the intensity of their behavior by mid-century. But if we invest in wildfire science now, we can learn to manage them better so we can save lives, homes, businesses — and our forests — for the future.

A New Zealand scientist has warned that a previously dormant fault could generate “megathrust” earthquakes of up to magnitude 9.0 in the Pacific country and trigger giant tsunamis. The Hikurangi plate boundary, located off the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island, is where the Pacific tectonic plate dives underneath the Australian tectonic plate. The so-called subduction zone had been thought dormant before the 7.8 tremor near Kaikoura in November 2016.

As nuclear tensions between North Korea and the United States grow, officials in Hawaii are walking a delicate line — planning for a catastrophe while assuring residents and tourists alike that they can keep sipping beverages from coconuts without alarm. The “without alarm” part gets harder Friday. That is when the government is set to bring back a statewide nuclear attack siren, a relic of the Cold War that will notify islanders that a missile is headed toward them.

When mere seconds of storm warning could mean the difference between harm or safety, two researchers with Western University ties have developed a tornado-prediction method they say could buy as much as 20 minutes more warning time. These radar-based calculations can forecast a tornado, with 90 per cent accuracy within a 100-kilometre radius, say Anna Hocking, a Western alumna and PhD, and Prof. Wayne Hocking, who leads the Atmospheric Dynamics Group based at Western’s Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science.

When it comes to tornado predictions, just a few additional minutes can save lives. Scientists at the University of Western Ontario in Canada have developed a new tornado-prediction method that could offer those vital extra minutes. The new prediction algorithm, based on radar measurements of wind speed and turbulence, can forecast a tornado with 90 percent accuracy within a 62-mile radius.

Greek authorities on Monday raised to 23 the death toll from heavy flooding near Athens this month, after one more body was found and an injured woman died in hospital. Some 100,000 people in Bali are being evacuated from a danger zone around a volcano that has been spewing ash thousands of feet into the air since last week, forcing the closure on Monday of the airport on the Indonesian resort island. The eruption, which is sending white and gray ash streaking off the top of the cone, began on Tuesday and was a first for the volcano in 50 years. Loud explosions from Mount Agung could be heard miles away. Officials say lava is welling up in its crater — a sign that a larger eruption is possible.
