In 2015, the Government Operations Center was called on to triage more than 5,000 incidents. Of those, more than 500 were deemed to be of national interest, requiring a risk assessment, planning and coordinated response, making it a vital nerve center.

After nearly a year of intense work, House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) today released a comprehensive review of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) use of intelligence to counter terrorist threats. The report, entitled Reviewing the Department of Homeland Security’s Intelligence Enterprise: Fighting Terrorism by Addressing Key Gaps, provides an in-depth analysis of DHS’ intelligence structure and functions, offering more than 30 recommendations with regard to streamlining and enhancing DHS intelligence efforts. “Although DHS has improved its ability to protect the homeland against terrorist threats over time, major gaps still remain,” stated McCaul. “As the next Administration’s transition efforts begin, I urge [DHS] to redouble its efforts to further integrate its intelligence organizations and systems. Fifteen years after the attacks of 9/11, DHS has made significant strides in sharing terrorism-related intelligence, but more needs to be done. With the dangerous terror threat environment we face today, the acceptable margin of error is zero.”

Leading the Federal Emergency Management Agency is a high-risk proposition. The agency’s administrator is always one failed emergency response away from opprobrium and dismissal.
So perhaps W. Craig Fugate’s most impressive accomplishment is simply surviving nearly eight years at the helm of FEMA. (He took charge of the agency in May 2009, after serving as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s emergency management director.)

During his eight years leading the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Craig Fugate has made changes both big and small to how the federal government — and, by extension, states and localities — respond to disasters.
He required the agency’s websites to be mobile-friendly so survivors can get the information they need if all they have left is the clothes they're wearing and belongings they could carry.

The Federal Emergency Management Agencys (FEMA) on Dec. 2 released its revised Youth Preparedness Catalog: Disaster Preparedness Education Programs and Resources, now available online. The catalog supports individuals interested in promoting youth preparedness education by connecting them with existing local, state, and national programs. It also directs readers to curricula and resources that can be used to develop or sustain a program. Youth preparedness is an essential component of community preparedness and is most effective when it uses children’s unique strengths to help meet their needs during emergencies and disasters. Starting or getting involved with a youth preparedness program is a great way to enhance a community’s resilience and help develop future generations of prepared adults.
