Are you getting the results that you want from your team? Do you blame them for not taking initiative, underperforming or not completing projects quickly enough?
As you think about your complaints, think about what your part is in the results. You may be a partner, director, principal or founder, but you should strive to be an inspiring leader no matter what your title. Having that attitude can change what you say, how you say it, and how it impacts your team.

Sometimes, we live life without any focus and fail to realize what we can actually get done. When big decisions are made without thinking, the regrets that follow are even bigger. Now when you have to lead, you can’t afford to dilly-dally all the time. If you feel you aren’t giving your best as a leader, then it’s time to think about what you are doing right or wrong. The first step would be to restore your focus. Staying focused all the time may not be an easy task but you have to be consistent about it. It's been just over five years now since my good friend Captain Andy Troncale of the Arcadia (Calif.) Fire Department passed away. Andy and I grew up together in West Covina, Calif. We joined the Los Angeles County Fire Department as Explorers at age 15. We fell in love with the fire service immediately. We never looked back and started our careers right out of high school. Andy succumbed to colorectal cancer at just 52 years old. Anyone who knew Andy knew he was tough, but not tough enough to win this time.

Lead on Purpose
Words matter. In many situations, especially when it comes to leadership, what we say, and how we say it, determines our success.
Situations arise where emotions run high and the choices we make have significant outcomes. The pressure is high, how we react makes all the difference. These situations are referred to as crucial conversations.

Linda Willing writes: "I recently worked with members of a fire department that 20 years ago ran 8,000 calls. Last year that same department ran 21,000. In that time, they have only added two more stations.
Talk to any firefighter and you will hear a similar story. They’re running two and three times as many calls today as they were 10 or 20 years ago, but they only have a few more resources to work with than they did before.
In some cases, departments actually have fewer resources to work with: less money, fewer stations and firefighters, the same equipment from a decade ago."

Podcasts continue to grow in popularity as a convenient way to stay on top of all kinds of topics. As a result, the field is becoming steadily more crowded — a recent check of iTunes showed more than 100 podcasts with the word leadership in their title. Some are focused on special interests like sales, religion, or the issues faced by women in leadership — but there are some that stand out from the rest.

Shazia Manus writes: "Strong leadership skills are not developed overnight. They take time to cultivate. It can be years, sometimes decades, before we truly feel comfortable taking a seat at the leadership table.
I’ve often been asked what my secret to success is. My response is usually this: There is no single secret. In fact, there are many. By engaging with professional peers, we can discuss and share insights about what works and what doesn’t in taking more challenging roles."

It’s that time of year again, when more than 50 million Americans seem more interested in their brackets and office pools than their work. March Madness is the season that spurs sports fans to become glued to their TVs and mobile devices, as they constantly check how their favorite college basketball team is faring.
March Madness, moreover, is when the entire nation seemingly comes to a standstill: Estimates are that during the first week of the tournament, employers may be losing nearly $4 billion in revenue. While those figures may seem astronomical, all is not lost. Because the tournament can still teach everyone a few things about business.
