Countless people have written on what it means to be a leader. And almost everyone identifies influence as the primary characteristic.

I recently had a small leak in our roof. You would think that it would be a simple fix.
We called a roofer who came out and poked around the roof. He said he would get back to us with an estimate that evening.
The sun went down, the sun came up, the sun went down, the sun came up. We called and asked.
No answer. Weeks went by. We tried another roofer. This time we didn’t get the estimate when he said he would, and he told us he just was too busy. And then another.

David Roberts writes: When I was 10 years old, my parents allowed me to have a birthday party to celebrate the occasion of hitting "double digits." Birthday parties were simple then, so it was just a few friends at my house for games, cake and ice cream. During the course of the party, some of my friends began to play with a beach ball and would not let me into play, so I took the ball and locked it in the bathroom. This allowed me to remain the center of attention.
