The U.S. Senate is poised to pass a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced the reauthorization bill, S.47, on Jan. 24, 2013. The bill is almost identical to the bill passed in the Senate last year during the 112th Congress.

Uterine fibroids — which can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and infertility — are the most common type of benign tumor in women of childbearing age.

Vatican official thanks media for uncovering sexual abuse in the Catholic Church

The Vatican's new sexual crimes prosecutor acknowledged that the U.S. media "did a service" to the Catholic Church through its aggressive reporting on child abuse that helped the Church "confront the truth."
The rare acknowledgement came from Father Robert Oliver, a canon lawyer from the U.S. diocese of Boston, speaking at his first public appearance since becoming the Vatican's "Promoter of Justice."

A student-written proposal to mandate sexual assault education for all University of Maryland undergraduates is one step closer to becoming law.
The bill, which would require students to attend an educational session during their first semester, was approved by the executive committee of the University Senate, a governing body made up of students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Mob-led sexual assaults targeting Egypt's female protesters could increase if perpetrators are not punished, an international rights group warned.
Amnesty International said statements from victims show that the assaults follow a "clear pattern," where mobs of men encircle the victims, assault them with weapons and hands and then try to undress them.
