Health Canada is sending rape kits to reserves in northern Ontario amid complaints from Indigenous leaders that they lack the resources to properly investigate cases of sexual assault — a widespread problem in Indigenous communities.
Only about 60 per cent of northern Ontario communities have the kits — a vital forensic tool for investigating assaults — despite Health Canada assurances to the contrary, said Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler.

Victims of sexual assault are now able to see a medical professional locally. Gonzales Regional Advocacy Center, otherwise known as Norma's House, has set up a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination (SANE) suite at Gonzales Community Health Center.
The heavily credentialed nurse working with Norma's House to provide these examinations, Noella Hill, is a Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Adult Certified Pediatric (CACP), Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), Certified Forensic Nurse (CFN). She has been an RN for 22 years, working in SANE cases for 10 years and working with Norma's House for seven years.
