Only some victims of domestic violence in Louisiana have gotten protection under state law: opposite sex couples who are married, living together or have children together.
But after two votes by the Senate, "dating partners" and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are being added to the list. First, senators approved New Orleans Rep. Helena Moreno's House Bill 223 to cover people who have or had an intimate relationship but who don't live together.

These bills give us more tools to fight child abuse and exploitation.“

Times of Trenton (opinion)
The state's rape crisis network logs an estimated 10,000 calls every year from survivors of sexual violence. Yet reports of fewer than 1,400 rapes made it onto police blotters in 2015.
A proposed "bill of rights" for those who are on the receiving end sexual assault would go a long way to lessen that gap by ensuring that victims are treated with respect and dignity.
