A June study in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology found there’s a “wide range” of what constitutes a “normal” vulva — and no two female genitalia are exactly alike.
In an analysis of more than 650 women ages 15 to 84, Swiss researchers measured various genitalia, including the clitoris, labia majora and labia minora, and found that vulval appearance differed significantly woman to woman. While the average labia minora, or inner labia, was about an inch long, lengths varied from one-tenth of an inch to more than 3 inches.

She recalls dead bodies on gurneys across the triage floor, a trauma bay full of victims. But "in that moment, we're not aware of anything else but taking care of what's in front of us," Mullan says.

After a traumatic experience in court, Brisa decided to set up A Breeze of Hope, a charity which provides medical, social and legal services to young rape survivors.

Over the years, Magistrate Judge Harrison Adika has heard more sexualized violence cases than he can count at courts in Nyeri and Kisumu in central Kenya. But Adika says many defendants facing such charges in his court have walked free for lack of evidence — until recently.
Things began to change in 2012, when Adika received specialized training in how to try sexualized violence crimes. “Training opened my eyes,” says Adika.

Someone's desire to commit a physical or sexually violent act may be stopped with a quick physical intervention in the brain, according to new research.
It's early in the work, but scientists at the University of Pennsylvania and Nanyang Tech University believe that they figured it out with a small experiment that involved stimulating the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that is involved in complex thought and decision-making. The results were published in this week's JNeurosci journal.

Violence is growing in American ERs, fed by patient anger over their inability to get painkillers and rising health care bills, as well as the proliferation of gangs and untreated mental illness.
“I got a black eye in a psych room when a patient pushed me against the wall and punched me repeatedly,” said physician Anne Zink, recounting events that occurred over several weeks at the emergency department of her hospital, the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska.

British researchers have tested a method to lift fingerprints from the scales of pangolins, an endangered ant-eating animal believed to be the most trafficked mammal in the world. Using standard gelatin lifters — small sheets with adhesive on one side commonly used by crime scene investigators to collect fingerprints and other trace evidence — researchers with the University of Portsmouth in England and the nonprofit Zoological Society of London (ZSL) have successfully lifted clear fingerprints off pangolin scales.

“Very bad things happen during religious festivals. Most community members go to join in the ceremonies, and those women who remain at home are very vulnerable. Perpetrators find out who has stayed behind — often widows — and go into their homes and violate the women. There are no locks on the doors, no protection. For a few hours, everywhere is deserted, and there is no-one who can hear or heed calls for help.”
