The Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence Reporting Act of 2013 (the “SAFER Act”) was enacted as Title X of Public Law 113-4, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. It was created, in part, to develop protocols and practices appropriate for the accurate, timely, and effective collection and processing of DNA evidence, including protocols and practices specific to sexual assault cases, which shall address appropriate steps in the investigation of cases that might involve DNA evidence[.]”

The release of the “Nauru files” last week revealed more than 2,000 incidents of sexual assault, child abuse and self-harm of asylum seekers, and documented the appalling living conditions for those held in offshore detention on Nauru.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton dismissed many of the files, including those documenting sexual assault, as “false allegations in an attempt to get to Australia”.

“Sexual minority” youth — defined as gay, lesbian and bisexual or not sure — experience substantially higher levels of physical and sexual violence and bullying than their heterosexual peers, according to a new report released today from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In a first of its kind study, researchers looked at national data to understand the issues faced by an estimated 1.3 million sexual minority youth and called for “accelerated action to protect the health and well-being of these young people.”

Police say sexual assault cases are notoriously hard to investigate, in part because so few survivors choose to report the crimes. In 2013, only 35 percent of sexual assault victims reported to the police, according to an estimate by the Justice Department. But, some police departments in Oregon are working to change that.

Mental health conditions are more common among prisoners than in the general population. Estimates suggest that as many as 26 percent of state and federal prisoners suffer from at least one mental illness, compared with nine percent or less in the general population. And prisoners with untreated mental illness are more likely to be arrested again after they are released.

The Give Registry is a brilliant new gift registry and ad campaign from Australian department store chain Myer and agency Clemenger BBDO Melbourne that uses the model of a wedding gift registry to provide linens, cookware, dishes, and other household basics to domestic violence survivors. “When a woman leaves abuse, all she often leaves with is her life,” Clemenger BBDO Melbourne said in a project description.

It’s no secret that the Indian Health Service, the federal agency tasked with providing health-care services to American Indians and Alaska Natives, is underfunded and overburdened; Native Americans are more likely to die from liver disease, diabetes, homicide, suicide, and respiratory diseases than the general population in the United States.
