Media's reporting on gun violence does not reflect reality, study finds
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine via EurekAlert!
A new study, led by the doctors who regularly treat gunshot victims, examined the way the media covers shootings and found that news reports place a disproportionate emphasis on fatal and multiple shootings, while also focusing on uncommon victims, such as women. The researchers fear that the gap between what is covered — and what goes uncovered — in the news could be painting an unrealistic picture of gun violence, which might affect the way the public perceives it. The study was published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

Many people may be wondering the same thing: why? Whitney Gravelle, the tribal attorney for the Bay Mills Indian Community, said it’s due to a lack of resources, law enforcement jurisdiction, and inter-generational trauma.

How genetic genealogy identified the killer in a Toronto cold case
CBC
Genetic genealogy, a forensic technique that previously helped track down the Golden State Killer and the murderer of a young B.C. couple in 1987, helped Toronto police identify the killer in a cold case from 1984.
"We just came in and finished out what had already been a very long investigation that had tried a number of different things," Anthony Redgrave, a forensic genetic genealogist who spent six months working with Toronto police to identify the killer, told CBC News Network.

Early trauma influences metabolism across generations
Neuroscience News
People who live through traumatic experiences in childhood often suffer long-lasting consequences that affect their mental and physical health. But moreover, their children and grand-children can also be impacted as well. In this particular form of inheritance, sperm and egg cells pass on information to offspring not through their DNA sequence like classical genetic heredity, but rather via biological factors involving the epigenome that regulates genome activity. However, the big question is how the signals triggered by traumatic events become embedded in germ cells.

World's oldest murder mystery was 430,000 years in the making
National Geographic
The first known murder was just as brutal as any other. The attacker smashed the victim twice in the head, leaving matching holes above the victim’s left eyebrow. The dead body was then dropped down a 43-foot shaft into a cave—where it lay for nearly half a million years.
Talk about your cold case.
