The Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019 passed the House in October and has advanced out of the Senate Committee to the Senate floor. Title VIII programs provide grants, loans, and scholarships to help prepare the next generation of nurses and ensure that we have a qualified and diverse set of providers.
We continue to have conversations with key members of Congress regarding our other legislative priorities. However, most of our bills are in the judiciary committees of the House and Senate which are currently focused on impeachment proceedings. We are hopeful that there will be movement before the end of the year, especially on VAWA and SASCA which continue to be bipartisan issues with bipartisan support.

The forensic nursing community has long known that the lack of expert Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) throughout the country has been a major barrier regarding attempts to increase the number of SANEs. Many nurses complete the didactic SANE course, but then find it difficult to identify an expert SANE in their clinical area who can then mentor them through their first exams with a patient who has been sexually assaulted. The mentor would then be available to them to answer their questions as they begin to accumulate their required hours and expertise in order to sit for the certification exam. For those nurses who do not have a SANE mentor where they work, there are clinical courses that are sometimes offered at a site where the nurse can attend a 2-3 day hands on experience in order to learn how to conduct an exam.

Post-traumatic stress disorder in U.S. military members frequently follows a concussion-like brain injury. Until now, it has been unclear why. A UCLA team of psychologists and neurologists reports that a traumatic brain injury causes changes in a brain region called the amygdala; and the brain processes fear differently after such an injury.
