From Oct. 1: Most everyone has caught wind of the firestorm that erupted when Joy Behar of The View denigrated nurses by mocking a heartfelt monologue performed by a contestant during the Miss America pageant. A recent MultiBriefs Exclusive by Joan Spitrey, RN, adroitly encapsulates the situation, offering a balanced assessment of the reaction to Behar's faux pas. Some nurses have leveled negativity against The View, but many others have joined a widespread movement of positivity.

From May 7: Each year, Nurses Week begins on May 6 and runs through May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. This is a week where the worker bees of the healthcare world get some time in the spotlight. Many nurses look forward to the week of gifts, praises and a reminder of the greatness of nursing. From Sept. 3: Since the early days of nursing, touch has been an intrinsic tool used by nurses throughout the world. From an encouraging hand on a shoulder, to a cool hand on a feverish forehead, to Reiki delivered at the bedside, touch is a hallmark of caring, healing and compassion. Even as technology becomes more central to healthcare and nurses become overwhelmed with tasks, skin-to-skin contact is an art that must remain a central tenet of nursing care.

From Sept. 24: During the talent portion of the Miss America pageant, Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, gave an emotional monologue describing her experience as a nurse. She described what many nurses have the opportunity to experience everyday — to touch a life in need. The nursing community was abuzz that a nurse was being showcased on national forum. The hashtag #nursingismytalent started trending on social media, and nurses were enjoying the spotlight. At least for a little while.

From May 14: In our nursing careers, we can often feel buffeted by winds over which we feel little control. We can feel like we "should" do this or that, make choices that others feels are best for us, or take paths that feel prescribed for us, not chosen by us. This career paradigm can indeed feel uncomfortable. Your career is like a long bus ride that begins when you graduate from nursing school. In school, you were likely told that you "should" get a med-surg job immediately, as well as other things that your professors said were paramount to launching your career.

From May 28: As a healthcare professional, your work requires you to be there for others, but how can you do that effectively if you haven't taken care of yourself? Now that you are acutely aware of where your hours go, it's time to look at what you can do realign your time with your priorities.
Lisa Cole, MS, RN, FNP, has spent more than 35 years in the healthcare industry. Her current business, Re-Source, focuses on helping people live and die well via lifestyle change, patient advocacy and care coordination. Through her work, Cole has learned three areas that can help reduce stress now and help you be more present as a caregiver.

From April 2: Nurses face daily situations that can powerfully challenge their personal and professional resilience. Compromised nurse resilience is one factor that contributes to nurse burnout, compassion fatigue, absenteeism and, ultimately, attrition from the profession. Resilience is not a luxury for nurses, and the forward-thinking nurse manager will monitor the nurses under her charge for signs of weakening resilience.

From May 21: Nursing student Jennifer Burbella recently filed a lawsuit against Misericordia University after failing a required class for the second time. The lawsuit claims she suffered from severe anxiety, depression and poor concentration and was not given appropriate accommodations during her final exam. This story has created a firestorm of opinions. But most seem to come back to the same questions — Is nursing really for everyone? Just because someone "wants" to be a nurse, is he/she really cut out for the occupation?

From April 30: As a relatively new nurse manager, I'm considering the ways in which I can powerfully inspire my team of nurses to be as functional, dynamic and cohesive as possible. It's clear that 21st-century nurses love strong leadership, but they also like to feel trusted and empowered. It's up to a nurse manager to walk a line that provides both. I serve as the director of nursing and chief nursing officer of a small home health agency, and we're poised to grow at a rapid rate in the next 12 to 18 months. Thus, creating a culture that we can maintain and nurture even as we grow is important to us.

From Jan. 15: Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers, but it can also be one of the most challenging. When we consider the complex needs of our patients, the demands of our employers and the ongoing changes in healthcare, there are so many reasons why self-care is so important. Once upon a time, nursing dealt a great deal with diligence and service to others. The premise that "it is better to give than to receive" was a commonly accepted, and with good reason. The good news is that nursing continues to remain about caring for others, but self-care is also crucial.
